2003 A4 3.0 Ignition Coils

Hello,
My 2003 A4 Quattro (3.0) is starting to experience odd rough idle periods.
It will pur like a kitten sometimes, then other times appear like it's ready
to stall. Sometimes it won't start without cranking it over several times.
It has NEVER done any of those things before 85,000 miles. At 85k the plugs
were replaced and the mechanic actually broke one of the coils which he then
replaced.
Since the car has 93,000 miles on it today, I suspect one or more of the the
ignition coils mail be going bad.
I'm considering replacing all 6. Does anyone have any
experience/recommendations for me?
Troy

and no engine check light or diagnostic trouble codes stored?
What brand and part number spark plugs? exactly what came out?
Maybe bad gas?
I vote Coolant Temperature Sensor for the fuel injection. That can go bad
and not set off the check light!

OK... my plugs were replaced at 85k by the DEALER so I'll assume Audi OEM
plugs.
Been running Sunco Ultra 93-94 since I bought the car religously.
NO check-engine lights.

Yep that pesky little sensor could throw incorrect information to the ECM
and allow the engine to run either too lean or too rich. It is not
expensive AFAIK

hi Dave - that sounds like a great place to start. Do you have any
product/part number or anything I can search the web for?
thanks again for the tip!

I like to use my vag-com tool to see if anything is wrong rather than
throwing parts into vehicles. The Coolant Temperature Sensor is not
expensive, but your 2003 is supposed to have the good one unlike my 1997.

Troy, sounds like you already have a place to start - but just FYI,
the symptoms you describe were NOT what I had when 1 of my coil packs
went bad about 2 months ago. The car would start fine, and idled fine,
but would stutter badly when I put any load on the engine - it was
only running on 3 cylinders, basically. That type of failure would
throw a code, causing the CEL to light up.
Cost to replace one was $300-plus, so I did NOT consider just
replacing the other 3 at the same time!

I agree that it doesn't sound like a coil pack. More like a vacuum leak,
failed MAF or coolant sensor.
Those dealers sure can get greedy.
Most on-line sources charge around $30 for an R series coil pack and
changing them takes only a minute. I have seen them for as low as $23.
