Cam seal Repair ? on 2.8L ATQ
 

Has anyone done this fix. I read somewhere that you have to remove the cams to do this. My local VW dealer is quoting my just under $1000 for the repair. I spec'ed the parts and they were in the $100 range. Can it be done easily. I'm really mecanically inclined and would not think twice about doing this normally but it is an Audi and I would like a little reasurance that it is not overly brutal to do.

Please let me know what you all think.

It's not a difficult job. Just be sure to clean all the surfaces very well, and don't use any grease/sealant on the seals. Also, take your time and get the seals in properly - they're rather prone to improper installation. There are tools seal installation and removal, but they're not required.

Make sure that you change the valve-cover gaskets and cam-tensioner seals as well!

Be sure to post pics! I'm trying to figure out how to do the cam chain tensioner gaskets when I do my valve covers but I don't know how to set my engine to TDC without tearing off the front bumper. :(

The valve covers are easy enough to do, but the cam chain tensioner gaskets require a special tool. The tool you can purchase off eBay for around $20.00 or so. Beats taking it to a shop that charges $80-$120/HR for labour.

You can remove and install the cam-chain tensioner without the tool, but it's rather difficult, so most people think that it can't be done. I've done it myself, so I know that it can be done. That said, you don't even need to remove the cams to change the tensioner gasket - you can just loosen then up a bit and slide the gasket underneath. Use a very light layer of the approved sealant, or an aftermarket version of it, on the gasket, and at the points on the valve-cover gasket as described in the Bentley.

TDC can be checked several ways: the marks on the cam sprocket and valve cover, the marks on the crank sprocket and timing belt cover, the marks on the transmission and flywheel/flex plate, and by using a soft object, e.g., a pencil, in the spark plug hole to see where TDC is (although this is not entirely accurate).

Thanks for your help Cheeba! You've brought new-found confidence to me! I'm going to take my engine covers off and see if I can find those markings on the valve covers.

BTW: Should I just turn a massive wrench to turn the engine or should I quickly start and stop the engine to move it a couple of degrees until it hits TDC? Thanks again!

Just turn the engine over by the crank sprocket bolt - it's 19mm 12-point if it's the same as the 1.8T. If you do think that you might change the timing by removing cams/belt/sprockets, be sure to rotate the engine over a few times to make sure there's no valve-to-piston contact. If you run into any troubles, just ask specifics and maybe post pictures if it will help. Good luck!
