I am buying a 04 A6. What are the pros and cons of the 2.7 Bi Turbo as compared to he 3.0.

I am more concerned with turbo breakdowns etc and REAL gas mileage.

The 2.7 is way more fun to drive, especially under full boost. But alas, you are already aware that the turbos will go. I did say will go, it is a for sure thing. Again the 2.7 is more fun but the 3.0 is far more reliable and quite a bit cheaper when you look at long term maintenance. I own a 2.7 and have had many opportunities to drive the 3.0. All in all both great cars. Hope this helps. By the way, the 2.7 gets fantastic gas mileage when you are not dropping your foot into it.

Consider a 4.2. Ive had the 2.8, 2.7T and the 4.2, and the 4.2 is in a different league, but isnt that expensive............

The 3.0 is a good engine, for a home mechanic a downside is the Timing Belt change... needs a complicated and expensive cam lock bar and the heads are little more complicated to repair if they develop variable cam adjuster oil leaks. Aside, one of the easiest to work on and and most reliable Audi engines is the 2.8.

There are 2.7T cars with over 200,000 miles on stock turbo's and still going. The reason the little K03 Turbo's typically fail is long term abuse combined with poor maintenance. For 2.7T fun AND reliablility, install a new pair of K04's along with a bit of other work and you will have a fast and reliable car. Some folks intentionally look for a 2.7T car with a blown turbo to $ave on the purchase price so they can help offset upgrade cost to K04's.

Gas mileage between 3.0 and 2.7T are about the same when not driven hard, conversely the 2.7T can consume a boat load of fuel with spirited driving.

I would go for the 4.2 but the communists in Canada won't let us bring them in from the U.S. and I am purchasing mine in New York state.
There are some 4.2's in Canada but they have to be built for the Canadian market.
If you want to import them, they are 'inadmissible' without explanation.

Im not sure why you wouldnt want a 4.2 made for the CDN market. There cant be much of a difference........

The difference is an A6 4.2 in Canada is priced at $19000 with 100000 miles on it.
I am looking at a couple different A6 2.7T in the USA for around $15000 with under 60000 miles on them.

I agree the Canadian cars and the American cars are relatively the same except for a few minor diferences. The big difference is the price. Canada sucks for high prices.
