Default Burning oil

My A6 recently started to burn oil. I was driving along on the highway and my check oil light came on I pulled over and checked the oil and it burned almost all of it. I could smell burning oil near where the turbo is but couldn't see any oil on the engine or leaking out on the ground. Top it up with oil drove to the nearest audi dealer and put it up on the hoist to see if there was any oil leaking, sure enough there is a leaky valve on the turbo the tech told that the extreme cold could be the cause. How big of a problem do I have and has anyone else had this issue?

There is no "oil valve" on the 2.7T Turbo's, only line couplers for oil and coolant. It is possible a coupler is leaking but this would drip obvious oil onto the ground under the leaking Turbo.

Is the car burning oil out the exhaust? If so, it's likely the oil seal inside the Turbo which typically means Turbo Replacement.

If you find that you need new Turbo's, suggest installing new and more reliable bolt-on K04 Turbos. I had a positive experience purchasing K04s and install bits from Clay at CTS:

Thanks, I don't think the car is burning oil out the exhaust so hopefully it's only a leaky line coupler.

Moosehead,

Hmmmmm, check the similar thread I started in the A4 section. Sounds like your car may be experiencing the same problem as my daughter's, and a fellow from Winnepeg. (Both A4's with the 2.8l V6) At this point, I suspect that the oil is simply not getting warm enough to flash off all the moisture that is accumulating in the engine, and is frosting off the engine vent system. The crankcase subsequently pressurizes, and the oil starts to leak out at the weakest sealing point. In my case, the valve covers and cam seals. Once I put the car in the shop and warmed it up, the problem went away. What was the temperature outside when you noticed the oil leakage?

Exactly the same thing happened to my A6 as soon as it warmed up the problem went away. It was -30 when I had this problem. Thanks turbine guy

Hawkey reported this: "1st time poster and proud A6 owner (when it is running properly!).

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has some information on a problem I have been experiencing this winter. Figure me on my lack of engine knowledge as some of the information may seem like I am a bit clueless.

On two occasions this winter (Alberta) the oil system of my car (2.7T) has been plugged up and sent oil through the intake(?) and it has settled in the turbo intake tube. It sends additional exhaust fumes and sputters when this happens. The last time it happened I checked the oil level and when I pulled out the dipstick it released a shot of air suggesting something is backing it up. On the last occasion I experienced the problem I turned off the engine and then started it again after a couple of minutes, the engine ran fine and there was no additional exhaust.

Has anyone experienced this problem and have any information to help guide my mechanic and myself to pinpoint the problem, and thus, avoid a bunch of additional sleuthing?
" Last January, when cold.

And K04-S4 responded with: "It is normal to have "a little" oil in the 2.7T intake system, usually settles in the low spots like lower Intercooler hoses, etc. A fine oil mist leaks thru PCV and back into intake while under boost.

If the engine block pressurized as you described, sounds like your PCV is freezing up. Typically caused by short trips in winter conditions, as in 25KMs or less. The engine gets warm enough to produce condensation but not hot enough to burn it off, then condensate freezes and temporarily plugs PCV. Confirmation if parking in a warm garage clears it up. Could always try a VAG scan to see if anything is reported. If high mileage, consider replacing PCV and plastic spyder hose assembly as it's possibly cracked with age.
"

Sounds like possibly your car's problem, and mine as well. Guess I should have used the search function first eh?

Another suspect item to check or proceed to replace if higher mileage is the Jet Pump. It is an inexpensive part but when it clogs, the crank case pressurizes and starts blowing out engine oil seals.

IMO, this part should never have gone into production as it clogs with age esp in winter and has caused far too many oil seals failures.

Engines including 2.8's and early 2.7T's had this part but not later ones so you have to check your engine to see if it is present.

Personally I would replace the entire PCV hose assembly and the jet pump if experiencing seal failures.
