Default Won't shift??

I brought my 1997 A6 Quattro Avant (auto) in for certyification.

It drove perfect to the shop. It passed with flying colours.

When my wife drove the car home it wouldn't shift out of first gear.

I looked everywhere for the tranny dip stick, but where is it?

HELP !!

As per OP, my car is a '97. I do not believe that tip-tronic was available that year.

Please correct me or advise how to get out of tip-tronic if I am wrong.

May be you are correct, my 99 has tip-tronic. My shift leaver moves to the right and than I can shift up and down manually.

Otherwise I am out of suggestions.
I am to new to Audis to give better advice

Ok, so I've learned a little this past week.

The Multi-Function Transmission Switch may be the problem. I located the switch and found some corrosion in the connector to the vehicle harness. I cleaned that up.

I have the car on level on jack stands. I removed the fill plug on the tranny and about 1/2 litre of fluid spewed out (that would be excess I believe). I drained the tranny pan and sludge came out at first (records show no service since 2000), then cleaner fluid came out.

I'm trying to take the pan off, but it seems bonded pretty tight. Is there any other fasteners other than the four bolts and claqmps on the corners of the tranny pan? I have another gasket and filter that I wish to install.

p.s. Another thing that I learned this week is that this board is pretty darn quiet!

very interesting, keep searching and keep us informed. Can you take pictures of location of switch and a step by step write up how to remove the pan and your findings.
With people like you the board might get more lively and informed.
I belong to a Porsche forum and it's much more informative.
I only can learn from people like you.

thanks
