Re-inventing the wheel, DRL for an A6
I had to install DRLs on a 1999 A6 I recently imported. Having read through a bunch of threads, I spent some time with the wiring diagrams.
It looks like the factory had a pretty simple solution. They taped line 3 of the light switch, through a module described as a circuit breaker and then to the output line of the fog relay. I'm assuming the module acted both as a fuse and reduced the fog lights to 80% power.
Taping at line 3 of the light switch powers the fogs only when the headlights are off. With the headlights on, everything operates normally, including the fogs.
The pin for connecting line 3 is available as a pigtail from the dealer for about $6. I taped the line from the output of the fog light relay and spliced in a 10 amp fuse. The only difference from the factory version is the fogs now operate at full power instead of 80%.
