I own a 2009 Jetta and love it.
I fixed it yesterday and it runs perfect. It is quite the learning curve. So, for less than $2K I have a fairly mint 137,000km '97 Avant Quattro.

One thing that you should purchase is a VAG code reader. One with on-screen definitions and the ability to erase dealer service codes (oil change intervals, etc.). That will run you about $150 on eBay or kijiji for a good hand-held one. It will save you a bundle if you need to have your car fixed by a dealer, as you can keep them honest!

As for running from the 'very festive' Christmas tree car, good move!

Good luck with your new car!

My wife doesn't want me to be reading any other VAG's but hers.

I'll keep that on my wish list, which is getting pretty long at this point and I have yet to take possesion of it yet.

Has anyone ever installed a Shark Fin antenna? The mast of my antenna is broken and I really like the look of the shark fin ones. But I don't know how invovled it is to make the switch.

1) unscrew OEM antenna
2) screw on sharkfin antenna terminal wire to base on car
3) remove 3M backing on lip of sharkfin
4) eyeball position (center/straightness) from rear of car; you should stand on a milk crate for this procedure
5) press sharkfin into place

* Of note: A sharkfin does not provide the same reception as a regular whip antenna. There is a significant tendency for reception fade outside of the urban core. For what it's worth, replace with OEM if you listen to the radio more than stored music files. GV makes ther best aftermarket sharkfin.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to see how bad the reception is now that the whip is broken. My car actually has a tape deck (yah talk about retro) but I actually listen to a lot of Radio so I might just get the OEM to replace.

Okay So I have now bought the following;
VAG5053
So that is on its way. I called my local Audi dealer (Crosby Audi, Kitchener) and got a price for the replacement Whip antenna for my Avant ($140) so I tried an after market on and it looked like the $20 replacement that it was so I returned it.

While on the phone with the dealer I asked about a Tranny service and he informed me that Audi's have lifetime fluid in theirs. Unless the tranny is having some real problems not to touch it.
Do any of you guys/gals have a person that you can recommend to service my new purchase? I live in Cambridge but would be willing to travel for a good mecanic. As you ALL say a good mecanic is worth their wieght in gold ESPECIALLY when you own an Audi!!

Please let me know.

Thanks

1) Nice unit, where did you get it?

2) Why would you do that? $$$$$$$$$$$ Call a wrecker and look on kijiji. There's a few guys who specialize in wrecked BMW, Volks, Audi parts.

3) At $18 to $27 a litre for Pentosin tranny oil, it should be!

4) I've never met a 'mecanic', but I do know a few 'mechanics'!

I bought the unit on Ebay I thought it was a good deal at $127 CAD.
I will look into the wreckers for a mast. I found one on Ebay as well for $10. It's a stubby I hope it works well.
The tranny is shifting a bit hard so I think it might be a good idea. I have read some of the threads and it looks like its a good idea and might help my issue.
Nice gab on my spelling (where's the spell check on this thing). I have a good guy that I have dealt with in the past but I'm not sure that he is the right guy or has the knowledge on these unique vehicules to fix it properly.

What has been your experience?

Do you have much mechanical ability? It is not too hard to change yourself, but if you really want a mechanic to do it, just look for a local indy shop that specializes in vw/audi. It should be hard for them to mess up a tranny fluid change... Just make sure you also get the filter changed, and do NOT get a "tranny fluid flush" from one of those jiffy lube type places. Tranny fluid flushes usually result in wrecked transmissions shortly after!

I used to do all my own work on all my cars, so I'm not bad. I try and stay away from touching suspension stuff though.
I will order myself a kit from one of the online guys. Do you have anyone in particular that you trust to buy from?

Thanks for the advice.
