Are you removing the caliper from the upright? I usually remove the bolts on the caliper slides, this leaves the carrier attached to the upright, the actual caliper is loose. A caliper reset tool is helpful, but the caliper can be reset with c-clamps or many other innovative home tools.

I don't know if this is applicable, but double check to make sure you know what bolts are the pins. I have to sets, one are the pins, the other holds the two parts of the caliper together, don't want to take those out.
