A6 problem: Loud revving noise when turned on...
Hello, I am new to the forums but am liking what I have read so far...
I have a 2001 Audi A6 2.7T and when I start it up, it sounds as if the engine is revving very hard, although the RPMs stay normal. When I begin driving it, the noise increases when I turn the steering wheel.
The noise is not a pure revving sound, but is higher pitched. It is not as high as a belt whirring, but still sounds like something slipping.
Also, after driving it around for a short while, the noise tends to go away. After starting it up a few times during the day, the noise goes away when turning on the car for the 3rd time of the day, but returns the next day or after a few hours of sitting.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
-Sam

Hey,
First of all welcome to AudiForum.ca From what you've described my first guess would be the power steering pump. If you search around the site you'll find this is a quite common issue, more so when it's on the cooler side and when the steering wheel is turned.

yup. An experienced Audi mechanic told me that that generation of Audis (1999 - 2004) is known for power steering pump noises. May need repair, but more likely is low on fluid. Be sure fluid is totally up. Also when cold as noted by SilentSam, they are known to make noise. Mine still does, and it's always been checked out, etc. I'm actually still on OEM 2000 power steering pump and just change fluid every 2-3 years and top up as required. Still makes a bit of noise upon start-up in winter on very cold days but noise goes away quickly.
