99 A6 Avant Q 2.8L Engine
A pulley seized on my 99 Avant today and it caused the timing belt to slip and with timing out,... well, lots of ugly going on.
-
Not sure if I should pay to have it pulled apart, diagnosed and repaired as needed or simply find another engine to swap in.
-
Love my Avant and don't want to let it go but must do math that makes sense.
-
Any suggestions or info regarding this problem, engine swaps, engine options, etc would be appreciated.
-
the only thing i don't like about my 6 is the lousy fuel economy...

Glenn,
It a shame to have that happen to such a cool car (got the same thing but a 2001) I don't know who is close to you for repairs but I would have it checked out before replacing. From what I hear the 2.8's are near bullet proof if you didn't smack the valves. I agree about he gas mileage, it's brutal.

Re: 99 A6 Avant Q 2.8L Engine
thanks for feedback.
damage was done to valves.
found a nice engine from a 99 A6Q at 196K kms for 900 cdn including taxes, delivery to local garage, extra parts like mounts, fans, ecu, harness, etc.
gonna put on new belts, pulleys, fluids, some gaskets, plugs, etc. and harvest what i need from current engine.
with luck, i'll get another 100+K kms out of it.
and sell the old block for something to take some of the financial pain away.
should be worth several hundred and i'll keep alternator, condensor and some other spare parts.
time will tell...

Sounds like you've got a good deal going on. I wish I had the expertise to do such a thing. Overall I'd keep the car, sounds like you're enjoying it. The 2.8 30V motors really are bulletproof.
