Default 1996 A6Q Fuel Tank Leaks

Hi,
I am guessing that I am not alone with this problem.
The seam on my 96 Audi A6 Quattro fuel tank is seeping due to rust. It doesn't leak enough to put a spot on the driveway, but the car's outside aroma is the same as a gas station!

A new tank installed by an Audi dealer appears to be about $2200 including new fuel lines.

Does anyone have experience with this rust problem? Any novel approaches to repair? Looking for help.

Are you sure they have a metal tank? Most to my knowledge are made from plastic, I know some of the audis have issues with the rubber seal ring that seals the sending unit/ fuel pump where it enters the fuel tank.. it's an easy fix, also be prepared to replace the hose claps on the inlet and outlet hoses, I think they are a #13?? Might be slightly smaller. Check that you aren't over filling the tank and not just letting it spill.

Just my 2 cents. Good luck

Thank you for the tips.
The Audi mechanic did show me the rusted seam and where it is leaking. He also said that newer models have a plastic tank so may not have this problem.

Oh ok then.. HEHE I stand corrected, Check out this site, they have most auto wreckers that have there stuff listed on line.. just go for common parts when searching, engine, wheels trans.. you get the idea, but you will get a list of them so you can pick a way till you find a good one, as you mentioned a new tank from Audi is a wea bit pricey.

Thanks for the tip - great site and I sent off a number of inquiries as they show stock of used tanks at reasonable prices. Got some replies and they just said that they cannot ship used fuel tanks. I don't blame them in a way because even an emptied tank is dangerous.
I gather that some of the transporters that bring whole cars from the US to Canada could safely transport a fuel tank but have not located one yet.
