Winter tires Help

Hi all i've been going crazy trying to find a winter tire and rim for my 2003 A6 4.2 without paying a arm and a leg. My A6 has Michelin pilots 255 40 17 on right now is that the preferred size? what are my options staying with 17's because I'm not sure 16's will fit. What price should i be paying or do any of you know any affordable shops?
Thanks

Re: Winter tires Help

When I had a 4.2 with 255s, I used 16" rims with, I believe, 235 winter tires. I bought RS4 clone rims and a set of 4 tires and it cost about $1,200. The tires were made by a subsidiary of Continental and were very decent.........

Re: Winter tires Help

Tire prices have gone up this year. Last week I bought a set of 18" turbine rims, and 255 winter tires for the Cayenne i just got. It was about $200 a tire, and $200 a rim. The tires are nothing special, but with the Cayenne you dont actually need much...........

I assume that you have already found tires since your post was from October. However if anyone else is looking for winter tires take a look at Nokian before you buy.

I have had Nokian RSi tires for the last 3 winters on my 2000 A6. They are great in the ice, snow and slush, they might not be the least expensive winter tire but I think they are well worth whatever I had to pay for them (I think with aftermarket rims the total package was around $1,200).
