Were you replacing the timing belt or doing some other sort of work in there?

When you say messed up the alignment do you mean the belt slipped off and the cams moved or something else?

I was replacing the T belt yes. What happened is, I align the crank shaft according to the arrow and used makes to make the cam shafts. when I removed the Tbelt one of them had slak. and since then it did not align. I tried to align it by hand but when I spin the crank it stops by something most likely is the pistin and vulves are touching each other. this is while the gear on N. so I was thinking if there is anyway I can align it back. I know no damages accure. I spined each cam and it does spin free without any issues.

Thanks for reply

Did you mark the cams beforehand? Do you have the camshaft locking tool too?

What you're going to need to do is make sure the crank is at TDC and pin it there. Then you're going to have to align the cams. Give me a little time to do some more research and i'll get back to you, I could have sworn I read a similar thread about a month back.

You are right. here is the link
Audi 3.0L V6 timing belt service DIY (BWW) - AudiWorld Forums

I think I have to get the tools. I will see if I can rent them but if I have to buy it I will.

I did mark the cams but it did not work I got to jamming point when I want to turn the crank. so it did not help.

Let me know what you find along with what you think about the above link.

Thank you for your replies.

The 3.0L is one of the more finicky Audi engines when it comes to replacing TB.

I would not even consider attempting it without the 3.0L Timing Belt specific tools to lock the cams and crank otherwise they WILL move.

Damn I didn't realize that you had a 3.0. I've never seen a TB job even done on a 3.0 personally so I probably won't be of much help. Still searching for that one thread.

You will definitely need the tools now that the cams are misaligned. The general procedure is to pin the crank at TDC and then line up the bank 1 cam, then use the tool to line up bank 2 and tighten everything down.

That is only if the pulley didn't somehow slip from the cam and cause an even bigger problem. I'll keep searching but it may be time for a visit to a trusted mechanic to get this all sorted out.

One last question about this issue, I should get my tools tomorrow and hopfully get it right.. when do you use the locking pin if you align the crank shaft to the mark? and which plug do you put it on if you have to??

Thanks

I just did my 2.7T and the lock engages the flywheel after removing the starter, You need to install the cam bar (make sure pistons down) before turning the crankshaft so that the pistons don't interfere with the valves. Good Luck
