99 A6 2.8 Auto - no start

I am going to cry. I have dropped almost $4500 into this car fixing it in the last year... timing belt, tensioner, cam timing sensor, MAF, and i think i have repaced virtually all of the suspension. last month the airbag light came on and the cruise control stopped working... the least of my worries.

This week i replaced the collant temperature sensor and replaced the coolant as it was throwing a code indicating "coolant temperature sensor out of range". basically when we had the car up to opperating temperature and then shut it off, it wouldn't start again for about 20 minutes. sometimes it happens and other times, it starts with no problem?!?!? the car turns over no problem, just does not engage and run. like i said, we wait 20 minutes and it starts fine. just checked the codes again and it's indicating P1136 and P1138... (long term fuel trim add. Fuel bank 1 and 2 respectively . System too lean).

I have checked the air intake system for leaks: no problem
I have relaced the MAF sensor
the only things i haven't checked are the fuel styem (press regulator etc) and Heated O2 sensor and O sensor control.

What is going on??? HELP!
Audi: never ever again. this was a $64K car brand new!?! what a breathtakingly horrible emberasment of a car!

Hi,

I have an Audi A6 ( The same model that you have) and have original parts from Audi and at very low prices. Let me know if you need something....

Re: 99 A6 2.8 Auto - no start

I had this problem on my '98 A6 Quattro. My mechanic is great. I asked, after having read all the scary stuff on the net, that it might be my MAF sensor. I took the car into him and he let me know that he has almost never changed a MAF sensor. My problem turned out to be a faulty purge valve. The fix was about 20 min labour and less than $50 - he simply pulled one off a passat that was totalled. So...try some reckers for a purge valve first, then Audi etc...
Also, get yourself some electrical contact cleaner from "THE SOURCE", or other electronics store. Take off your hoses between the engine and air filter. Tilt the MAF sensor unit up so you can see into the small wires that are part of the MAF - you don't even need the special tool to get the MAF out, or even take it out. Spray the contact cleaner into the MAF. Do the same for all the connections for the MAF. Wait a half hour, reconnect and start.

Seriously, try the purge valve change before you loose your shirt on the other stuff.

Scott.
