Default Intermittentent lack of power

1996 A6 2.8 Q 128K

Recently purchased with about 4 years of history. About once a week the car would refuse to accelerate or would miss or ping on the freeway. Check Engine would flash. Read the codes at Autozone, listed missfire on all cly, and various fuel mixture codes.

The car always ran cool, so decided to do the tstat and a tuneup. Tstat came out of the block in two pieces! Anyway new tstat and plugs and wires, and a fuel filter only solved my temp problem.

Decided the coil pack must be faulty so replaced with new. Now I got rid of the flashing CEL, but still have this strange loss of power. Pushing on the throttle makes the engine RPM drop. Turn off the engine, and start it again to clear the problem for a few miles anyway.

Is the fuel pump failing? Thanks.
