I have built show cars ,I have detailed cars for over 20 years .Yes you can spend a full day washing and detailing a car but to the average person they do not have the time or the patience to do so .If all you want to do is to keep your car looking its best you can do it in just over a couple of hours .First a good hand wash with a quality car wash soap ,then a complete dry off .Next depending on the condition of paint I would give it a quick buff with a mild pre cleaner and buff off with microfiber towells .Then a couple of coats of wax by hand .Some like to use a buffer other do not ,but I find I get a great shine by hand ,and again buff off with micro towells .For the average person I would use Turttle Wax Ice soap and T w paste wax .There are amillion different opions on this topic and I do not say I am a Pro but by the sounds of it you just want to keep your car looking nice without turning this into a full time job .Good luck and just have fun doing it as it can and will be satisfying to do it yourself
