Default 2013 A4 Break-In & Consumption

Hello,

I picked up my new 2013 A4 2.0T Quattro S-Line Premium Plus 6-Speed on Tuesday with 16km on the odometer. I had driven the first 350km in the city and been easy on it.

By easy I mean I have not exceeded roughly 4000rpm and there were rarely any instances where I have applied full throttle. It is stated in the owners manual to do this for the first 1000km. After the 1000km I am then encouraged to gradually increase rpm and start to go full throttle until about 1500km when it is considered to be "broken-in" where I can drive it as I please..

I am now at about 1600km. From about 350-1500km it was driven on the highway in 6th gear ranging from 90-120kmh. On the highway it was driven nice like how I did in the city. Please note it currently has the 17" pre-built Audi winter tire package with Dunlop 3D winter tires installed and the 19" Conti summers are set aside until spring. I also have the OEM base roof racks and OEM Ski/Snowboard holders installed.

I am finding that when I fill the tank the DIS states I may have about 700km of fuel remaining but I am finding I actually get 450-500km per 55L by the time the tank is almost empty (500km is optimistic). When travelling on mainly flat highway at 110km/h in 6th gear (cruise control on) the DIS displays 10.5-11.0L/100km average when reset every hour or so.

My 1998 A4 1.8T Quattro 5-Speed with 342000km consistently gets about 8.5L/100km as the average stated in the DIS and actually gets 650km/55L of fuel when driving on the same stretches of highway with cruise control on as well.

It seems odd that my new car consumes a considerable amount more than my old car.
They both have winter tires and the same roof rack setup and same load in the vehicle.

I suppose my question is, does it really consume this much more fuel because it is a new car? It is advertised that the electromechanical steering for 2013 is supposed to shave off almost 0.9L/100km compared to 2012.

Does anyone have any input? I love the car but this seems abnormal.

Thank you

I would not get too excited about your gas mileage at this point, although the manual may say your A4 is broken in enough to start driving it harder. My understanding is that your mileage won't reflect what the specs say to expect until around 10,000K. I have a '12 6 spd s-Line with 11,500kms on it and my combined average is about 9.2 l/100 kms and I drive at 120kph on the highway. Highway only average is 7.5-8.0l/100kms depending on conditions. Remember your mileage will also be reduced during the winter months and with snow tires. Once you get your mileage up and get the Conti's back on you should see an improvement. Of course the biggest caveat to your mileage is the weight of your right foot.

You are most likely going to burn oil since you did the baby break in procedure. It's a common problem with the 2.0T engines. The absolute worst thing you can do when breaking in an engine is take it on the highway at a constant RPM.

THE B8 A4 Oil Consumption Thread

I hope it doesn't happen to you.
