Gislaved NordFrost 5 - not very expensive, super quite, handles well and wears just as good too. love them Great tire, ground clearance is the only limited factor, and even then, I've plowed some streets with my undercarriage dragging. Not ideal, but I got through where the softroader SUVs couldn't. |

The Nokian Hakka R's are on my Subaru right now and we've also got a set on the wife's Subaru. They're great in powder and slush. My Subaru is a couple inches off the ground so its pretty much a snow plow in the back alley and I've never even been close to getting stuck in the deep stuff. As for ice, they're about as good as any other non-studded winter tire that I've driven.
Yes, its not a performance tire on dry pavement, but that's not what its meant for.
