2010 A4 2.0T Oil Burning Problem (Pistons)

Hey Guys,

I just purchased my 2010 Audi a4 2.0t (6speed manual) with 78,000km in the beginning of April 2014. (from Queensway Audi)

Ive driven 7000km so far and every 1500km - 1800km I have to add 1 Liter of Oil.

Took the car to dealer they did a Oil Consumption Test and they Determined and replaced Crankcase Seal and Crankcase Breather Valve..

Problem Persisted to happem, Took it back and now they are telling me that they have to replace the Pistons ! How can the pistons need to be replaced on a car that has under 80K on it. I didnt just pay $30,000 to have problems.. Once they change the pistons the car will never be the same and after my warranty is done Dec-2015 I know I will have nothing but problems because now the engine is rebuilt and not original.

Anyone else have this problem or have any Tips or Advise i would greatly appreciate some advice and comments as i have to go to the dealer tommorow.

Thanks for Your Time,

Damian Zielonka

If you haven't already check out the many "oil burning" threads, there is plenty of info on this unfortunate issue.

Your car will be better than it was new. This is a known problem. Think of it as getting a new motor.

My 2010 also had the PCV valve and seal replaced. Helped a little but it still burned oil. They replaced the pistons and the car doesn't burn a drop now. No problems at all. You're getting a new engine! Take it!

I bought my 2010 A4 2.0T 6 speed with 16300km at queensway audi also in 2013...i had the same issue, except they never needed to replace any parts. They simply did an oil consumption test and then had me come back and check the oil levels which according to audi canada was within spec. I have met 2 other b8 a4 owners at my dealership which were there for the same issue...audi said it was normal and nothing to worry about. In your case i would have the dealership replace whatever they think needs to be replaced while its still under warranty. If anything it'll run better.

I wouldn't accept their response. There is a problem with the 2010 and 2011 pistons. The problem will only get worse with time. They put 2012 pistons in my 2010, along with the other changes. Doesn't burn a drop between 15,000 km oil changes.

I went back and spoke to them, the answer that they gave me was that its still within Audi Manufacturers spec,. meaning that they wont be replacing anything. They told me to top up the oil inbetween oil changes, which i will most likely need to do about twice, for a fee of course, because they dont give anything away for free, even if they arent willing to fix it. Audi of Mississauga, and Downtown Audi both said that they will look into the matter and hopefully get the problem solved, but in the mean time they are willing to give me free top ups...hmmmmm. What do you guys think? Any more ammo you guys can give me that i can use to get Queensway Audi to fix my issue? Thanks in advance.

I would also be in contact with Pfaff Audi, they have amazing customer service. This is a known issue and can be dealt with if taken to the right dealer. 3/3 Audi A4 2.0T's (including mine) at my office have now had everything including pistons and rings done. None burn a drop of oil anymore.

Re: 2010 A4 2.0T Oil Burning Problem (Pistons)

Wow! From what I read regarding this problem I thought every car with this problem is fixed by the dealer, by replacing the pistons. Is not fair that your dealer is refusing to repair yours and covers his a...s with the shocking statement from the owners manual (look for oil consumption chapter).
I think you should contact Audi Canada as many people did in this regard.

BTW the MMI oil level display represents 1 liter of oil between min and max (max=full oil level=5 liters, and min=full oil level - 1 liter = 4 liters)

My 09 was up to 1.5 Ltrs per 1000kms! Dealer replaced pistons and rings on extended warranty and now it does not burn a drop. I have a neighbour who's car was beyond warranty who negotiated with audi Canada to have some of the cost covered...think he ended up on the hook for labour only...still pricey though.

Hey guys,
Do you all know if the dealer (Pfaff or an other dealer) will cover a 2009 audi 24 2.0T Q with no warranty? It has approx 119k. I bough it from a private dealer in toronto. The car burns oil like no tomorrow, its shameful to even say how much it burns. I went to audi of Mississauga and they said i need to pay 1k and if test fails then they send report to Audi of canada and hey may or may not approve replacing pistons but not gurantee it... what a crappy deal. I paid 23k for this car last year. Any help is valuable, thanks.

Audi Of Canada has denied my good will claim for stage 2. I paid out of pocket for stage 1 already.

The dealer cannot help either

I am the second owner and there is very little service history on audi dealer system. They are requesting more service records which is not realistic to produce since I am not the first owner.

Any ideas on how to approach from this point?

Hey guys, good news regarding the Oil consumption issue.

Just received this message from my friend at a dealership:
Fyi, just saw a bulletin that Audi is covering oil consumption for 8 years or 130,000 km from the original inservice date. There are limitations and exclusions 2009-2011 2.0t CAEB

Good luck everyone :)

Re: 2010 A4 2.0T Oil Burning Problem (Pistons)

Hi,

The oil burning problem looks like is coverred by Audi Canada to A4/Q5
car up to 130.000Km (8y). The coverage is transferable from owner to owner.

I bought my car (Q5 2.0TFSI) from motorland (non Audi dealership)
Toronto at ~112000 km on November 2014. Today Feb 28 I received a
letter from Audi Canada which says: the car is covered up to 8 years/130.000Km
for oil consumption problem (no engine modifications, all genuine parts in the
car, proof of services since I own the car
).

My Q5 eats so far about 200..300 ml / 1000 Km (1L - 3300..4000 Km) which
is way below the Owner-manual which says that can take to
1/4 gallons (1L) / 1000 Km.

Should I go for the oil problem to Audi or not ?

Thank you.

...took it @ Pfaff Audi @ New Market. (extremely impressed by the service and personel).
stage 1 done. (ECU, Bolt, Seal). Cross fingers for next incomming timeframe.
After this intervention ... runs much smooth, less noisy, more torque, and looks
like less gas consumption.

Guys: My 2011 A4 started to burn excess oil at +- 55k. used 1 leter between oil changes before that. I installed a APR stage II ECU chip, in 2012 with about 35k on the clock. Although Audi have extended the warrenty on the car to 80k (now at 66K) the service managed says because the car is chipped the warinty is void. Do any of you have experience with warinty issues when the car is APR chipped?

If it takes 1L for about ~5000Km I don't think you're eligible for any fixes.

Hey guys, I know there hasn't been any responses to this in a few months but I just wanted to pass on what my Audi dealer told me yesterday when I bought my 2010 A4. I left the dealer and the low oil light came on, I went back and they topped it up. The service guy said that it shouldn't be a problem anymore because they just replaced the pistons/rings etc... due to the recent recall. This is the first I had heard of this issue but in talking to him, this was a recall item. If so, no one should be having an issue with getting this work done I wouldn't think.

Regards,
Corey

Mine has passed the warranty limitations as well. The day I bought the car, I left the dealership and the low oil light came on so I went back and they added some oil. He told me that the car did have an oil burning issue previously with the 2.0 engine and he said that many things were now brand new in the engine, including new piston rings due to a recall repair that they had just performed. I'm heading to my dealership today to pick up a new bluetooth mod so I will enquire more about that when I'm there.

Here is what I would suggest you do. Since Audi Canada knows about the issue and wants to play dirty with its customer base, you can play just as dirty.

You would go to the dealership and have them take the inial test in which they fill your engine up with oil till its full.
What you do next is before your car hit the 1000km (preferrably between 800km and 900km mark) mark
You drain exactly enough oil to make it a 1L deficit (you will need to lift the car and unscrew the oil pan drain plug), enough so that the min. oil message appears on the MMI
After draining the oil make sure you clean the oil pan well so it doesnt seem like you did it yourself, and give it some time to dry
Take it back to the dealership and let them do the rest (they will confirm that the oil consumption is too high and will schedule the rebuild)

Your Welcome!

So I was in my dealership on Friday having my proximity door locks replaced and I asked them about this recall that the parts guy had told me about for the oil consumption issue. They told me that it wasn't a recall but what Audi did was extend the warranty for another two years to fix any cars that came in with an oil consumption problem. Mine car was one of those. I bought my car, used from Audi one month ago today, and I asked them if they could print out all the work that was done when the car was traded in to them prior to me buying it. I was shocked at all the work they did under this new warranty. They removed the engine, replaced the pistons, rings, heads, spark plugs, timing chain, etc... the list goes on and on. The service advisor said that the car had almost $10000 worth of work done and that the engine, except for the block itself was pretty much all brand new.

I'm thinking that if my 2010 with 124000kms on it could get all this work done for free under this new Audi warranty extension (that everyone with the 2.0 received apparently), why not everyone else?? Am I missing something?!?

I found out that if you cannot find oil change documents for even few changes they will not honour the warranty.Audi Canada really needs to realize their reputation is going pulled thru the mud because they wont admit there is a manufacture issue and just do a recall on the problem parts. No more Audis for me.Doesnt surprise me with the VW fiasco, same dirty company.
