Okay, I have the manual in front of me...
The fuel recommended for your vehicle is unleaded premium grade gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 91.
Your vehicle may also be operated using unleaded regular gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 87. However, using 87 octane fuel will slightly reduce engine performance.
Use unleaded gasoline only.
So, the only restriction is to use unleaded gas.
Now, my car is an 2005 A4 B6, and the recommendations and restrictions may differ for more recent Audis. But if they are the same, well... the wife wins !!!

The way I see it, you'll see a bit better performance and a bit better fuel economy from a 91 vs an 87
You'll probably also NOT have your car knock
You'll thus go quicker, go farther, and not break the car. All pretty good I'd say.
I'm tuned for 93, so I don't really think twice about getting 93 or better. I mean you (OP) are driving a $50,000 car, when all is said and done. If you're leasing it, you're paying about $700 a month for the privilege. If you drive 24,000km per year per your lease agreement, the extra 9% cost of 91 vs 87 is going to add about $300 a year to your total $8,400 leasing costs. I say why bother cutting corners? Just enjoy the car to its fullest.

I know a lot of Audi mechanics/techs from the top notch guys etc. I have been around Audis for a long time, anyways not here to put down insults or get into an argument, but all the extra work your car is doing by constantly offsetting the timing and all the things that happen there after has to have a significant influence and decrease the life of the engine.
If the optimal performance was designed for 91 or higher why would you de-rate your vehicle? I mean you are paying top dollar for an amazing piece of engineering and you are debating on $300 per year if that even
What bothers me is people like you that do not give a crap about anyone else but themselves, If the manufacturer says put 91 or higher does not mean ride it out at 87 so you save a few pennies.
Now you are gonna come back with "the manual says its OK to use 87, just read the wording and between the lines prior to responding to this. And also go read your Gas Cap and what it states on there

Minimum, but it does go on to state 87 is OK, I think this is implied only for a short period of time not the cars entire life span.

If it was dangerous to the engine, it would say "do not use or you risk damaging the engine and voiding your warranty."
I've seen this same wording in manuals for years...recommended is 91, it's OK to use 87. I have yet to hear about or read about in many, many years of doing my own engine maintenance, a single case where engine damage or failure has be clearly attributed to using lower octane, quality fuel in a daily driver car.
Has anyone else?
That was the main question I think, not whether it was affordable or would cause some small decline in mileage or performance.

3. It's up to the owner if he/she cares about maximum performance, or about saving money. We might have different opinions, but we can not judge.
