It took the better part of three weeks to get someone at Ford, the parent company, to finally ok the work.

I've never been jerked around by Audi, but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if they tried to avoid paying out a claim if the part in question was related to the fuel delivery or combustion process.

I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but if $400/year extra for premium fuel is this much of an issue - you probably should have purchased a different vehicle.
Everyone keeps say "if you cant afford the extra money for fuel, you should have bought a different car..." but it might not be the reason they are asking the question. Perhaps it has nothing to do with the fact that they "cant afford it"... I dont think we really know...

Short version: you can destroy your engine running lower-octane fuel. The ECU will not pull timing until it actually detects pinging via the knock sensors - by then engine can already be toast. Sure, you might run it for its entire life with no problems, but you also might get on it at 5000RPM one day and BOOM! Your call on the gamble.
Cheeba, is this from a personal experience?

Wow, it's going to get pretty quiet around here. I thought this was a discussion forum.

No - I'm not that ignorant.

It is a discussion forum; but, how exactly does that mean that people should just post their unsubstantiated feelings when giving mechanical advice? It's great to discuss things, and even perfectly fine to have ideas that are incorrect; however, actually using those ideas to advise someone when caring for a $40,000 machine is irresponsible, and well, ignorant.

To be clear, I wasn't posting that comment towards anyone in specific - I'd just like to see less of "my buddy's cousin's Sister-in-law's goldfish's babysitter has a Dad that is a mechanic and says that you can run Adam Stasiak's home-brewed Vodka in your 1.8T with no ill side effects. It's a good rule to physically understand what you're talking about before giving advice on complex mechanical things.

Ignorant is just not filling it up with the right fuel IMO, dont buy the car if you cant afford to maintain it, and just hand off the problem and headache to someone else.

Look at this for example,
A young college guy just graduates and buys your leased vehicle with all of his savings after paying off loans etc. after a few months the engine gets knocking and a whole sprial of things go wrong, because you the intial owner could not afford $800 extra in gas over a span of 2 years and have now caused the poor guy $10 G's in damage, who suffers? Obviously not the arrogant, self concided first owner.

This is really getting to me, if you cant afford the extra money for the gas, then dont buy the damn car.

I know the statement is rude and ignorant but not as ignorant as the issues you are passing to the next guy. I highly doubt the OP will ever come back to this forum or post in this thread, and just follow his wifes advice.

technically it's possible, for practical reasons. The car is designed to run at its optimum using 91oct, but can be run on lower octane (in case you travel to remote places that only sells 87 oct). An engine designed to run on higher octane can still use lower octane, but will not run efficiently. You might experience poor performance, and more importantly, poor fuel efficiency which might actually offset the savings or even increase your costs by using a lower fuel grade.

When you lease a car, you enter into a contract to make payments as well as doing all the recommended maintenance. You also agree to return the car in good shape and if there are any excess wear and tear (and internal engine damage) then you will be responsible for the repair cost.

At the end of you lease it's not just "walk away" for you. Audi is especially **** when it comes to lease return inspection, and your car will be thoroughly examined.

The decision is ultimately yours - pay now for the proper octane gas, or potentially pay later in repair costs.

You might get away with it, but then that's a moral question which I will not get into.

I am with 1move here. The OP asked for our thoughts. I didn't mean to offend the OP or his wife. If I recall correctly, I said nothing like "stupid b*$ch blah blah blah". I chose my words to what would best describe her attitude towards her decision. That's all. Yet I receive a warning. I respect that. I do apologize if I may have projected myself, to what they might feel, inconsiderate, from what I said. Again, I chose a word that would best describe her attitude towards her decision. I didnt call her "stupid". I have always believed that the word "ignorant" defies as a characteristic of something or someone ignoring some sort of matter.

Now call me a hypocrite, because I too was ignorant that I may have said things without researching. I look at a forum and treat it in a way as if I would be discussing it in person. In my defense, when I discuss things with friends and foes in person, I am not going to pull out a encyclopedia and research papers to ensure everything I say is correct and true.

As far as Hyundai/Honda using premium. Does this apply to ALL models? I am not one really too interested in doing research on that. So I will stop my debate there.

BACK TO ORIGINAL TOPIC!
To the OP:
I would speak to your wife about the issue. If you feel that it's OK with you, then so be it. If you have any issue's about it, then maybe you should speak with her to reach common ground. As 1move declares, if you cant afford to maintain it properly, then dont buy it. I have lots of respect for all the engineering efforts others have put in this.

Okay... We all know this is a moral issue, and I am impressed that all of us were on the good side of the fence (!) Even OP I believe is with us. Obviously his wife is not, or maybe not yet.
Going back to the technical side of the story: I must admit that I am not 100% sure but the manual - my car's manual - says that 'it is recommended to use 91 and up'. Well if it's only recommended the translation to me, at least, is that using 87 is not going to damage the engine, otherwise the wording should be different. Yes, losing the performance, and affecting the fuel consumption... but not damaging the engine. [ I will check the manual again tonight. ] Maybe Cheeba knows very well about the implications of using lower octane gas, but I am now referring only to the wording in the manual. In case the manufacturer knows that the use of a lower octane gas all the time is going to damage the engine I expect to be warned.

There should be no offense taken by anyone here. This is exactly what this forum is for. Open dialogue even if controversial.

Congrats to all!!

87 vs 91 will give you poor preformance as mentioned earlier and overall worse gas milage then the manufactures advertised gas milage.

Geting back to Honda and Hyundai once again they do have a similar 2.0T as in the A4. Performance wise not sure but I would imagine that it was tested and rated at the higher octane level.

Maintain the car properly it will treat you well. Do a crappy job at maintaining it, it will cost you an arm and a leg + a pretty penny. There is a warning for ya
