Independent Tuning did my timing belt, water pump, serpentine belt, tensioner, relay rollers and replaced the coolant - good price ($812). They did an excellent job.

Mark checked the high pressure fuel pump follower, it was about to go. He replaced it while he had everything apart, showed me the part - it was deformed.

I appreciate him taking extra time to find other items to recommend, they were saving me money, and less inconvenience in the long run. They also inspected my tires, and found a nail, it was repaired.

Independent has a good reputation in this forum, and I understand you were ticked off as it came as a complete surprise a couple of days after your rad flush. But didn't you also post that another Audi mechanic in your neighbourhood confirmed Mark's diagnosis as accurate?

Try Charles Maxwell at Superior Transmission at 7605 Woodbine Ave., Markham., 905-513-8400. Shop is small and not super high tech, but he worked as an Audi dealership mechanic for 16 years and I know he recently did an A8 timing belt et al. (not mine). He of course has done many others over the years. He is also as honest as the days is long. I've known him for 18 years. He can be a bit slow - as in a 1 day job might take 2 or even 3 days, but his hourly rate is less than half of what a dealership charges. He's slow because he has so many loyal customers all trying to get their cars fixed at same time and he has a small place with maybe 1 or 2 guys helping him out. He's saved me a lot of money over the years.

$750 with parts included is really chip, like I said OEM parts cost around $750, after market german parts around $300-350; depends what u wanna change can be more.
Contitech and FK bearing this is what u supose to use if u can't afford OEM parts. Other companies I dont recomended.

I'm just wondering how hard it is to mess up a timing belt job?? Is there a way to find out if the mechanic messed up the job.

The last thing I want is to get it done & then 3-6 months later find out that it wasn't done 100% right.

I've never been to the place in Vaughan but Independent quoted me 900 + tax for a timing belt job on my 2006 2.0T. H2Sport in georgetown quoted me 750 + tax.

You gotta wonder why the price difference. Does anyone know for sure that Independent uses OEM or higher quality parts?

And is the 2.0T more expensive to work on?
The timing belt job on my 2000 A4 1.8T cost 750 tax in (at Independent when bryan was there).

OR maybe the price difference is due to different shops having different hourly rates....and different time requirements to do the job.

Some shops tell me it's a 6hr job. Some say it's a 3-4 hour job.

If the higher cost is due to higher quality parts, I don't mind. But I don't want to pay for 6hrs on a job that will take 4.

Any thoughts?

I just had timing belt et al done at Pfaff Vaughan dealership in December and cost was about $1800 plus tax. Labour is about 8 hours, but that's on an A8. I had it done also 5 years ago at Agincourt Autohaus, now Audi Midtown, for $2100 all in, so they were a bit pricey back then. I got abot 126,000 km on car between timing belt servicings. 4 hours sounds a bit light for labour time. Maybe if mechanic is doing these each and every week could be done. 5-6 hours sounds more reasonable to me on an A4.
