potential purchase 2006 2.0T
Just test drove a 2006 2.0T and was very impressed except for two things:
the engine seems to make a ticking noise - kind of like old valve tappets used to but i'm assuming that by now Audi is using hydraulic lifters? Is this normal for the little 4 banger?
Also, under heavy braking when the ABS kicks in the front brakes seem to make a grinding noise. Not a squeal or shudder, just a really awful grinding sound. Under normal braking the brakes are very firm and quiet. Is this normal for this model?
Frank

Re: potential purchase 2006 2.0T
I believe the ticking noise is normal. I have 2.0T GTI and my brother has an A4 2.0T and they both make that noise. Dont quote me on this but it may have to do with the fact that the 2.0T uses a cam driven fuel pump. As for the brakes I would have a look at the wear on the pads, they may be running low.

I had same in my past Audi 07 A4 2.0. More noticeable in winter when cold. Sounds like a diesel. Lol. It's normal.
As for brake part not sure about that. Never heard anything unless slammed em on and then just squeal from leaving rubber!

if it is the diesel sound - then yes it's normal. My 3.2 is known for that too. It's the fuel injectors I was told that give it the FSI part of the engine - stratified injection must more precise fuel delivery
as for the breaks, they shouldn't grind IMO ask to see the brakes with the wheels off and have new pads/rotors all around if you can argue it into the price - regardless of what the dealership tells you - rotors are cheap for them to buy

I know what you mean about this. When the ABS is on (like when coming to a stop on ice) the brakes do sound and feel like they are really grinding. I assume this is normal. Mine has been like this forever even when I had new brakes when I got the car a few years ago (CPO vehicle).

I find mine has that diesel sound more when it is cold, once it warms up it isn't very noticeable.
As far as the brakes grinding that isn't normal, mine just makes that pulsating ABS sound that all cars make on hard braking.

I drive a 2006 a4 quattro, all in all a fantastic car. Beware getting into the brakes though. Took mine in for some new pads and before I knew it I was $2000 in with new rotors, calipers, master cylinder and boosters.
I had over 100k on mine so it was due.. but gah.. does it ever burn the pocket.

Re: potential purchase 2006 2.0T
I can see new pads and rotors, why everything else? Seems kind of excessive. Calipers should only need new seals and even at 100K originals should still be fine. What happened to the master cylinder? On modern cars they should outlast the car itself (same for brake booster).

**** happens!
but not something you see often.
mine go's great only thing is the xenon light bulbs wow 190$ a pop!! but the dealer told me it was kind of a ''recall'' that audi passed by as a memo that those years could be covered by the warranty.
had a problem twice with the clutch,it slipped in 4th gear and up and never slipped again....weird but if it ever happens again well upgrade time!
got the apr chip waiting to get the RAI down pipe.
i was thinking of selling our sline 2006 but finally gonna keep it.
