Default gear grind sound, and clunk when accelerating

Hi,

I have a 2004, 3.0 Quattro. This past couple of weeks, when I reverse, I hear a gear grinding for a second then it goes away. Almost like when you drive standard and miss. Doesn't sound good.

In city driving, when I step on the gas, there is almost no acceleration until I push it further and almost bang I am going. Groceries in the trunk fly around.

Highway driving no issues. Iin the city in my opinion has terrible gas mileage. V6 I guess. Interestingly, I went on a nice long trip on the highway a few weeks ago, and had great mileage with cruise control.

Is the acceleration and gear grinding normal? I've had the car scanned multiple times - no issues. Talkiing to a few friends - this is ok? I've tried the trick to take the memory out of the gas%

check your tranny fluid. If your fluid is low your torque converter will slip and then catch hard...giving you a clunk, or a hard engage.

Pretty hard to check the fluid on our trannys, unless I'm missing something. I would try and find a shop that will change fluid and filter.

Let me clarify, there isn't just a dipstick on our transmissions that you can check your fluid level. There is a fill/check plug on the bottom of our transmission. Now there are 2 plugs, one is drain one is the fill/check. The Larger of the 2 (17mm Alan) is the fill/check. This isn't a simple task as the vehicle should be idling while the check is done, and once the transmission has warmed up a bit, fluid should start to dribble out.

So if your not mechanically inclined, I don't recommend doing this. Take to mechanic to check and add some if necassery. If they suggest a tranny flush say, "No, but a filter/fluid change would be nice". When they reply, " but these are sealed transmissions, and we only do flushes on them." Say, "I do not want a transmission flush, if you don't want to change the filter then I will find someone that will". If they insist on a flush, then kindly decline and find someone who will do a filter change.

Yah I talked to a few people and its a bit of a complicated process. There isn't a dip. I made an apointment with a place next week to have it looked at it...

So are you saying there is a transmission fluid filter?

Yah. The reason I stress changing the filter rather than doing a fluid flush is a fluid flush doesn't really help much. It gives you nice new fluid, but all the paticulates that have been stopped by the filter will not only still be in there, but they will have been stirred up and will end up clogging the filter.

I actually found the procedure involved online

Audi Automatic Transmission Fluid - How To Change Audi Transmission Fluid...

Funny -

"Some Audi authorities suggest that you don't need to change your Audi's automatic transmission fluid. We simply feel this is illogical. An Audi automatic transmission has hundreds of moving components inside of it, such as needle bearings, pressure pumps, clutch packs, servo pistons and seals. These internal components mesh with one another, begin to wear, and create finite metallic particles which contaminate the Audi automatic transmission fluid. Over time, the Audi automatic transmission fluid (ATF) and paper filament transmission filter become contaminated with these particles"

Whats really funny, is there are actual magnets in the pan, to collect metal filings.. scary stuff. Are there magnets in the regular oil pan?
