FSI High Pressure Fuel Pump/ Cam Shaft Problem

New to the forum. Hoping someone can shed some light on a recent mechanical issue that I have been faced with on my recently acquired car, an '06 A4 2.0T. It was intermitantly showing the check engine light. The wholesaler in Toronto that sold me the car, at a good price, directed me to their local shop who cleared the "Audi only" code and told me I didn't tighten the gas cap correctly. Upon closer observation there is a warning on the actual gas cap indicating this issue, fair enough, problem solved. NOT. After $600 in mostly labour  and two visits to the local Audi dealer they have advised that the cam follower running on the valve cam shaft for the high pressure fuel pump is missing and the cam is now damaged. This apparently is retarding the amount of throw on the shaft for the pump to make the necessary pressure to feed the fuel requirement under acceleration. This is why the car falls on its face when entering traffic, its takes upwards to 20 - 30 seconds to get "gas" again and the check engine light illuminates. The repair quote was ... $2300.00 :x I had them put it back together as is.

Here's my question, has anyone else experienced this?? A private shop told me that this is a problem with the 2.0T FSI engine. They all have the issue around 80,000 - 100,000KMS. The valve cam shaft and fuel pump has to be replaced at major expense, this has also been happening to some of the VW turbos (and diesels) as well. Any input would be appreciated.

Yes, this is a fairly common problem. I have an '07 A4 Avant 2.0T that i purchased in early June. In September at 69,000 KMs it threw a CEL and had no power. Turned out it was the cam follower and fuel pump.

Luckily for me my car is still under warranty and the repair was completely covered by Audi. I wasn't aware of this problem before it happened but after a little research found that it was pretty common. The replacement camshaft has an updated part number and the lobe that the cam follower rides on is supposedly harder to pevent the problem but regular inspection and replacement of the cam follower seems to be what most people are now doing.

Thanks AC. When I purchased and the code was already displayed, by the time I figured it out the wholesaler said "sorry, 30 days is already up". The mileage was already 87K when I bought it. Thanks for the advice, will be following it religiously. Do you recall the updated part number or bulletin info?

No problem!

The updated camshaft part number is 06F 109 101 B.

The TSB is 2013147/4, this link has a copy of the TSB embedded in it: http://www.awe-tuning.com/media/pdf/...FP_Upgrade.pdf

If you do a search in the B7 A4 forum over on Audizine.com for "cam follower" you will find lots of info including procedure on how to remove the HPFP to check the cam follower for wear.

I've started a facebook group I'd invite everyone to join about this issue, as it's becoming more and more prominent with the 2.0TFSI owners...

/group.php?gid=235507629582

My vehicle was less than a month out of warranty with only 40K on it when I had this critical failure, and Audi offered me NO goodwill or support. I am thoroughly frustrated with the customer service and fact Audi knows this is an issue for the owners and will not help us out...

Note my link has to have www dot facebook dot com added to the beginning. I have another account but forgot the password, and the @!)(#&!@&( retrieval thing doesn't work properly :( Can also search 2.0T FSI engine cam / cam follower issues.

Post pics and stories, I'm trying to rally a splash with Audi!

I had the same exact problem, power/gas loss under acceleration on the highway. Nashville Audi dealership said they weren't able to replicate the problem so couldn't provide a diagnosis. I investigated myself and found my cam follower holed out with the fuel pump plunger riding on the cam lobe. I replaced the follower with the one I purchased. I'll be replacing the cam, fuel pump and probably the follower again shortly.

I am now having this problem on my 2006 A4 2.0T. The car has 120,000 km on it. I purchased it in 2015 from Glenmore Audi (Calgary), and they failed to disclose that this TSB existed, and clearly hadn't fixed it already at that point. Now the MIL/CEL light is coming on, and the computer is the throwing the code that links it to the TSB. Audi Canada is saying "not their problem" since the car is out of warranty (it was out of warranty when I bought it from them). As far as I am concerned, the dealer fraudulently told me the car was good when they KNEW this problem was going to happen. Now facing a $4000 bill to repair, and the car is hardly worth that.
