Default Dealer Oil Changes

Just bought a 06 A4. I have the service records from the dealer it was serviced at but all they say is Synthetic oil and filter service done. Any ideas what brand and weight engine oil most dealers use? Is it okay to mix brands as long as the weight remains the same?

I don't know what brand the dealer uses however your car takes 5W-40 or 0W-40 fully synthetic motor oil. On the back of the oil check to make sure it has the VW 502 rating. Yes it is okay to mix brands as long as it is equivalent. For instance I know that Audi engines are famous for using small amounts of oil so I keep a Litre of Mobil 1 0W-40 in the trunk. This is not the oil I use to do an oil change but in a pinch to top up it will be just fine. The last oil change I used Lubro Moly fully synthetic 5W-40

+1 Mike in fact Audi Prestige & Audi Lauzon both use exclusively Castrol Full Synthech with OEM filter same viscosity you mentioned
Tech told me I can also use Mobil 1
Hope that helps

Since I don't know if they used 5W-40 or 0W-40 am I safe to buy either just for topping up. I am a big Castrol fan so I was going to get that brand anyways. I appreciate the quick response guys. Good to know I'm not the only guy cruising the forum daily.

For sure you are not alone!!

Consider doing your own oil changes. Great learning experience.

I have checked with 2 different dealerships and they both use Castrol Synthetic 5W-40.

YEP...
A few weeks ago when I fully inspected my car I paid close to that...Full 2hrs inspection, new OEM battery, oil & filter cost me $620

For all regular maintenance I will stick with my local friendly mechanic. If it is something too complicated, I wpuld then consult a specialized Audi independent shops like Rombotis, VAG...etc before having to see a stealership

I do my own oil changes with Mobil 1, 0W-40 Synthetic Euro Blend @ $35 for 5 liters at Canadian Tire and an OEM filter from the stealership @ $12 every 5000km. This may be overkill but I only drive about 8000 kilometers a year consisting of short trips to and from work of about 8km each way. My last oil change was in Feb and I've only driven 3500km. If you like to wrench around and love learning about your car, then I totally recommend buying some ramps from Crappy Tire and doing it yourself.

I've also installed a product from Fram called a Sure Drain where you install a one way check valve instead of your drain plug bolt and you just hook up the supplied tube into any holding jug and let it drain. No mess from the bottom end but the filter is another story.

Biggest thing to ensure is that it is VW 502.2 oil and the 5W-40 weight. It won't be synthetic if it doesn't have the 502.2 designation.

Tough to find Mobil 1 VW 502.2 5W-40 on the island from my experience.

Castrol Edge or Syntec are the labels to look for.

Walmart carries the 5L container, Canadian Tire carries a 4.4L container. You will need almost a full 5 L.

I've started ordering filters etc. from the States and picking them up at a mail box we have in Blaine when I can. The VW filter from the States will cost you 50% less that way. Air and Cabin filters are even better savings, and don't forget no HST.

Remember the oil filter housing takes a 36mm socket to loosen off for the 2.0T engine. Next on my list of tools to order.

I still haven't found how to re-set the computer after an oil change. Can anyone advise on this trick?
