Default Am I being Hassled?

Hi guys,

Last week I went to the used audi dealer to check out some A4's. I already knew which model I wanted but I didn't want to let the salesperson know right away. I was looking for a used 2007 A4 S-Line with titanium pkg. The car cost about $27 995 and its at 89k km. So after a little while I told the salesperson that I wanted to test drive it. Came back then sat down with him.
the vehicle seemed to be clean and in perfect condition but cant be 100% sure because it was around 8 at night and snowing. So after talking a bit, he told me that if I didn't take the extended warranty which cost $2200, the interest rate on the financing would be about 7-8% versus 2.9% if I purchase the warranty. I partially agreed since he said he would include and install brand new winter tires. I did not agree a 100% so even though I signed the pupapers, I told him that I would be back because I had also refused to put the $500 deposit he wanted me to. I'm 25 years old but I don't have a lot of experience with negotiating deals...
When I purchased my first car at 18 years old I got ripped off so bad, so I don't want it to happen again. Is the warranty a good idea? Is the car's price to high even though its S-Line titanium with 89k km? Any advice?
thanks!

In my neck of the woods, 28 grand plus tax for a 2007 with those kms is a little steep, even from a dealer. A reasonable dealer price on that thing is, in my opinion, closer to 26. This story about the financing rate is a little odd. It sounds like he's telling you that without the warranty, the vehicle isn't considered certified pre-owned and therefore doesn't qualify for the VW finance rate on certified vehicles. I'm not sure that makes sense. A car being certified pre-owned means that it's passed a certain inspection and is in a particular condition at the time of sale. It seems like a greasy move to tie the warranty purchase to the certified designation.

1) Ask him to explain why the financing rate is tied to a warranty purchase. Better yet, go talk to the business manager - salesmen don't always know about this stuff.
2) Get a carproof report. The dealer should have one if they certified the car.
3) Ask him where he got the car (auction/trade/lease return)
4) If it was serviced at his dealership, ask to see the service records.
5) If the car is certified pre-owned, ask to see the certification records. You'll be able to see what they did to the car to bring it up to the certified standard. This will also give you an idea of how much money the dealer has sunk into the car, and therefore how much movement you might be able to get in the price.
6) Don't ever sign papers before doing all this.

If this car was bought at auction (wholesaled) by the dealer and then certified, I'd walk away. You're paying dealership prices without mitigating any of the risk that you'd be assuming by purchasing from a private seller with some warranty left on the car. On the other hand, if this is a lease return with full service records, I'd feel better.

its lease return with one owner, I had already asked him this. Thanks for the great advice though. I'll remember everything you wrote in your reply then go see them again this Friday probably ask for $26k max.
If you guys have some more helpful advice please share!

If I ask for $25 995 instead of the $27 995 that they're asking for (this including the purchase of the warranty and free winter tires), would that be asking for too much? Im going back to the dealership this friday so I need all the advice I could get guys...

not 100% on prices, but for instance my '06 3.2 A4 has only 90,000km's on it.... this car is newer with the same KM's.... just saying, I think the finance rate is BS - but I think PS7 nailed it on the head for the cert pre-owned

you definitely need to ask more, it's too bad you signed on it though, because that probably gives them power, despite you not leaving a deposit

I say dont get emotionally attached! Biggest mistake anyone will ever make, you get emotional over the purchase and it makes you think you won the battle, be cold hearted buyer. When I got my A4 it was for sale for 33K negotiating and all got it down to 27k tax in, however this usually isnt the case, I pointed out all the flaws and didnt admit to their Flawless report etc. pointed out a lot of things and thats what brough the price down. Their best price was 29.5k I told them give me a call when the price is 27k. So a week later they did and I negotiated even more and got 3m for free.

I agree! if the dealer dude know you are enotionally attached to the car, they will ring you out!
I like your low ball offer idea. I would low ball them and ask them to meet me in the middle.

Extras and accessory/tire stuff isn't really that important to me. I'd rather them lower the price of the car so i can pay less taxes on that price. My $0.02

(i've seen friends do this in the past)
If they don't budge, do some car shopping around. Go back in a few days and say you got a better offer from an independent dealer, see if they can match a lower price.

If I'm not mistaken, the car you're looking at is at Audi Lauzon and from previous experience, negotiating with them is not easy. The best thing you can do before buying, is to educate yourself about retail ( private and dealer) asking prices, wholesale prices, finance rates and CPO warranties. Knowledge is power when it comes to negotiations. I recently put a deposit on a used 09 A4 after looking at 08's and 09's for about a month, so here's my advice.

1) Price....their advertised price of $27,995 is very high and does not include CPO warranty. None of the Quebec dealers include the CPO warranty in their prices. As far as I know, they are the only province to do this and it's misleading. If you could get this car for $27,995 including the CPO warranty and winter tires, you'd be doing very well. I'm not saying that would be a great deal, but likely the best deal you would get from them on this particular car.

2) CPO warranty.....the low financing rates from Audi Canada are tied ino the CPO warranty, so you have to buy a CPO car to get the rates. BTW, the cost for the CPO warranty in Canada is $1800 to the dealer, plus any repairs to bring the car up to CPO standards. Some dealers mark this up to $2200-2500. But if you don't take the warranty and want to finance the car, you'll likely pay a much higher interest rate which can cost you at least a few grand extra in interest over the term of the loan. So unless you're paying cash, I think the CPO warranty is a good deal because the finance rates are so good, plus you add 2 years warranty to the car ( there is a $100 deductible however and the coverage is not as good as the new car warranty).

3) Contract....you really shouldn't have signed anything until you have an agreed price and you completely understand the terms and conditions of the deal. Thankfully, you did not give them a deposit, so you should just ask them to tear up the contract you signed and start over again. I would insist on a Carproof report and service history print out for the car. These are things that any reputable dealership will provide. If you're still serious about the car, I would make them an offer that you are comfortable with and present it in a very confident but friendly way. Tell them you are prepared to commit to the deal that day ( if the offer is accepted) and you will give them a deposit. Just make sure you really understand what is included in the price. If you feel intimidated by the salesman, ask to deal with someone else.

4) Be patient...be firm on the price you are willing to pay and realize that there will be more cars available. Remember that this dealership has a ton of used A4's right now and if they are interested in your business, they need to be more reasonable with their price. Most dealers are hurting a little right now and most sales people are very hungry for a sale...keep this in mind !

Good luck, stay cool and confident.
