Hi guys, well as the topic says i have a doubt, but first any of you guys drive this car? So i can hear some opinions and choose between automatic or standard. Like which has better performance, economy etc...

My 2c worth is that manual provides a better, more immersive driver experience since you are in more direct control of the car i.e you decide what gear you want to be in at any given instant in time. Ref performance theoretically a manual agives better economy because you have a clutch rather than a torque converter however the manual might mean you drive the car a little harder so use more fuel. Some folks have lots of commuting in stop/go traffic so having to always use the clutch and change gears can be a pain.

All boils back to personal preference.

Thanks for your reply. I also rather manual, because i always used manual gears on my cars, but i thought this multitronic system had more performance, for more info the one i am going to buy is an avant. Anyways, how is the fuel economy?

For me, there is no comparison: Manual all the way.

For me it is 100% for the driving experience. There is nothing special about the 06 Auto at all, it's pretty much a standard slushbox with tiptronic shifting, it's not a fancy DSG or anything like that so you should get better performance out of the manual. As far as fuel econ they should be so close it wont really matter. I find I can personally always get slightly better econ out of a manual though.

Also, I think you are far less likely to have any mechanical issues with the manual vs. the auto as well. The manual gearboxes in these cars are made by Getrag and are more or less bulletproof. Getrag also makes the manual transaxels for the AWD Porsches and the longitudial manual gearboxes for pretty much every BMW so that should tell you something. You may have the replace the clutch one day but honestly if you know how to drive it should last you 200k.

So yeah, for what it's worth, I say go for the manual.

If you want performance and driving enjoyment then go for manual.
If you sit in traffic all the time that's when i would suggest think about automatic.

Nothing sucks the performance spirit out of a car like an automatic transmission. Manual always.

It really comes down to a personal preference. At the end of the day when you go to drive your car what is going to make you happier? Are you going to have any regrets down the road?

If its any consolation, I drove an 07 2.0T quattro and the clutch in the 2.0T is light as a feather and really not very annoying in traffic at all. The clutch in my 3.2 is more like a brick though, it was shocking how much of a difference there was between the two.

Happier? Driving it manual I was just wondering if the fuel economy was better on auto, but if it is the same thing, go manual go
