Hey guys,

Looking for those that change your own oil on your 2.0T. When looking up the process on where the filter housing, etc is, I came across a tutorial that suggest to use a drain tube and a special 36mm socket for removing the filter housing. It linked to the following sites:

So my question is to you all, are these things required? I can appreciate that they may make things cleaner/easier, but are they needed?

Do you all have them and use them?

I've done countless oil changes, on many different vehicles (cars, trucks, motorcycles) but never on an Audi.

Would I be stupid to try this without these tools?

I would say you could do it without the socket but not without the drain tube...I know people are going to say you can do it without the tube you just have to drain it with a screwdriver blah blah blah but really if you are going to be doing your own oil changes, its not like you are going to use it once or twice, you will probably use the 5 times a year and it will make life easier FWIW...

I would recommend this one from ECS, it is made of brass, just be careful not to force it on otherwise you will just tear up the plastic threads on your cannister, it should screw on easy otherwise you are probably cross threading it...

Drain it with a screwdriver?? That one is new to me. Care to explain?

I'll check into getting a tube. Guess I won't be doing my oil change over the holidays as planned.

Well obvious that is relative to how much you drive, maybe less maybe more...

 

I have heard of guys doing it without the hose and just using a screwdriver to open the valve in the canister and drain the oil out onto ?? well I don't know exactly because when I first bought my car 6 months ago I got my first oil change done at the Audi dealer and it cost $140, so I bought the tube, some filters and oil and do it myself for less then half...

 

I thought our oil lasts 15,000 km before it needs to be changed. I change it once a year, maybe twice if I'm driving across the country..

 

I believe it is 5000mi/8000km is what they recommend but don't quote me on that, however I change about every 5000KM, I drive about 1000km a week so about every 2 months I do an oil change....The cost of me doing a few 'extra' oil changes might cost an extra $100-150 a year, which is way cheaper then the wear and tear on any other parts if they were to go, the fact that the car is a turbo makes oil changes all that more important but like I said to each there own...

 

I too go with a change of pure synthetic every 5k MAX, I aim for 4k, but It just depends on my schedule. I have done two changes in a month this year. I usually purchase my oil/filter and parts through my family where I get them at cost, and have my oil changed while doing other work on my car (mechanic done) simple things like bulbs/tire rotation checks etc.... if it's nothing more than oil, he often doesn't charge me which is great just bring 5-6 coffees for the crew next time

15,000km for an oil change is BS, IMHO if you have to add any oil between changes, there's something wrong. change your oil faster!

 

if your following the service interval, you better be topping off your oil or your low oil light will most likely come on. Point is, check your oil levels constantly unless your doing a 5k-8k change. Personally, i do 8k oil changes.
