Hey guys,

Was hoping I could get your thoughts on this. When the engine is cold, I have a rough idle when in Drive. Does Not sound like it's going to stall...but it is rough at idle. Once the engine warms up - say after 10 min of driving, it seems to be fine, and the car idle's much more smoother.

Above are details of the make/model.

Any idea? Thoughts? Do you think this would be a major fix?

I don't have an answer for you, but my new-to-me 2007 A4 2.0T sounds pretty rough too. It sounds like a diesel engine. I had it at the dealership and they said it was normal sounding for this engine. I walked by another A4 2.0T in a crosswalk and it sounded the same.

Still not sure it's supposed to though. Sounds pretty cheap to me.

The A4 is new to me too. The diesel type sound of the engine is normal. It takes getting use too. I'm coming from a japanese car, so I'm still adjusting to the turbo engine sound.

How does yours idle? is it rough? ie. when idle does it shake/vibrate a little? especially when cold?

Aside from the diesel sound, mine seems to idle quite well I think. From the inside I don't really notice it at all.

Have you tried the basics yet? I know that it shouldn't need new plugs at 60k, but its possible they could be fouled up if the previous owner regularly didn't take proper care. You might also want to try a fuel injection cleaner and/or gas line antifreeze to see if that helps.

Assuming there are no codes being generated, I would stick to the basics first. Maybe check the air filter too. Any of these things can cause a rough idle.

Keep in mind though, that I am far from an Audi expert with all of its electronics.

As mentioned, the 1.8T and the 2.0T are very loud for gasoline engines; they have rather interesting harmonics due to design, and the inherent imbalance of an inline 4. The injectors and valvetrain are also quite loud, giving that slight diesel-ey sound.

That said, has your car always done this? If it's a recent change in sound, then something is going on. First thing to do: get your car scanned to find any codes it may be throwing. Secondly, try to determine if the noise is coming from the head or the block - this can be done with a mechanic's stethoscope, or in a pinch, a screwdriver with the handle on your ear.

Common problems creating noise in head:

- injectors
- cam-chain tensioner
- lifters

Common problems creating noise in block:

- piston slap
- rod knock

It's unlikely that the problem is block-related if it goes away after 10 minutes, but don't discount it entirely. Bottom line: get it scanned and post the codes! Check here: https://www.audiforum.ca/general-aud...om-owners.html

Tumbler flaps in the intake manifold seem to be one of the known causes of rough idling. check with your dealer to see if there's a TSB out for your VIN number.might also be engine mounts.

These engines are known for timing chain tensioner once replaced the engines are very quiet. I have done many a real pain because it’s so close to firewall. Hope this helps
