Rear tire Metal noise on uneven road

A4 quattro 1.8 2005
On uneven road Rear driver side tire making metal on metal noise, like 2 coins hitting each other. No noise when go over a speed bump. Only on uneven road ( minor potholes and such). Mechanic looked under the car, he found nothing.

All bushing looked uncompromised ( by eye ) . I tried to shake the wheel while the car was in the air, did not notice anything.

Looking for suggestions.

Thank you.

It could possibly be the brake dust shield. Or exhaust/heat shields. One other thing to check is if the rear bumper clips are broken where it attaches to the body. My two bumper center plastic clips are broken and makes a clanking noise when the rear bumper vibrates. It's annoying but I haven't looked at replacing it yet.

Hi mate - I have exactly the same issue, metallic knocking noise from the rear of the car. As you say, like two metal rings hitting each other. Was driving the car off a kerb to see if I could locate it. As it hits the ground, bang ! Jacked the car up but could not see anything loose. Got me stumped this one. Have you had any joy ?

It's the rear bearings. I had it before.

Re: Rear tire Metal noise on uneven road

found the problem: Driver side rare spring broke at the very bottom. 1 inch long metal spring part separated from spring at the very bottom of spring. it could not fall out cause bottom part of spring and everything around it had a 'cup' shape so it got trapped there. We used a hammer on the tire to recreate the noise, it worked. Took us 10 minutes thou to pinpoint the source.

mechanic wanted $150 labour + 2 rare springs $100 each ( gotta change both to keep height of the car same.) = $350
I looked up on kijiji, found used once for 125k km for $30 all 4.

Now all i got to pay is $100 for labour to replace 2 rare springs. Total cost 130$. I wish i was handy enough to change them myself lol.

Found the problem too - same as Spri - driver's side rear spring - the end snapped off. Quite a common problem apparently. Knew it wasn't a bearing as I had no vibration or sideway movement in the wheel. Springs ordered and will replace next week.
