Oh boy, not another cam follower thread...
 

Got my Audi a month ago, from a used car dealership. Unfortunately I did not purchase CPO, which I have a feeling I am going to regret. Anyways, the car had a hesitation taking off from a complete stop, I didn't thing too much of it, since it is a turbocharged engine. This being my first Audi, I really didn't know what to expect.


Fade to present, check engine light comes on. I pull out my 'ole Matco Tools scanner (I was in a previous life a auto mechanic), anyways I get out codes P2293, and P0087. I start looking up on the internet about the codes I just pulled. It seems there is a defect... ugh.


I called the nearest Audi dealer, and picked up a cam follower hoping it was going to be an easy job, and it was....


When I get the HPFP off the head, I was appalled at what I found. HPFP is missing the clip for the spring, and the cam follower is missing CHUNKS. Not only is the top missing, but parts of the sides as well.


Currently the car is at the Audi dealership for repair, they are going to replace the HPFP, follower, and the camshaft under warranty.


My question, has anyone had this repair done to such an extensively damaged cam / follower / HPFP, and not had residual issues with the engine?


I am debating on if I should just sell this thing off, when I get it back, or if I should keep it. My wife and I both love the car, but I cannot justify dumping tons of time and money into a 7 year old car, if it isn't going to last.

Have a read through the audizine thread about the cam followers.

First off, if you haven't already, sign up to Audizine. It's based in the States but has an enormous amount of information on all things audi.

The 2.0T are notorious with the cam followers, they need to be closely monitored at all times before issues like you have experienced happen. The biggest issue is having those missing chunks rattling around in your engine now.

Having said that, because of the fact that there are so many 2.0T engines out there, a recall wouldn't be cost effective for Audi. So for the older gen 2.0's, there isn't not much you can do about it other than replace your cam frequently.
