Front license plate bolts

Having recently moved to BC from Alberta I am needing to install a front license plate on my car. After searching many sites it was recommended that I get M6x1.0x8mm bolts. I purchased four bolts from CT from the bin marked M6x1.0 and take them home and try to screw them in to make sure they will work.

Low and behold they're too big diameter wise. I don't know if there are different size holes for certain models or if somebody at CT put the wrong bolts in the bulk container. Either way I need something different, should I go to the dealership and pay their hugely marked up prices to make sure I get the right size or try Homedepot maybe?

Find the thread size, and go to home depot and get some. It will be much cheaper if you do that. Just bring a bolt to home depot and ask someone to help you out to match the threads. Then find the right size

The problem I am having is that I don`t know the bolt size needed. I purchased what I thought was the right size and they don`t fit. I am trying to get around having to purchase many different sizes and taking them out to my car to see what fits.

Good point. I never thought about doing that. Thanks for the idea

That seems rather odd. You can purchase a license plate installation kit for less than $10 at Canadian Tire. It includes the plastic plugs that fit into your license plate bracket and the screws that go with it. If your vehicle never had a front license plate installed then there should be no holes in your front bumper blank, so you just four pilot holes and pop those plastic plugs in. Slap on your license plate, use a #3 phillips for the screws and you're set. No need to go back and forth or to install univeral bolts.

Yup. I agree. At Canadian Tire and Home Depot as well as many other stores you can take products out of their store and check to see if they work just as long as you leave your driver's license with the cashier. But I do find it odd that the vehicle was insured in Alberta yet it has provisions for a front license plate.
