2006 Audi A4 Cam Follower Replacement (GTA)

Hello All,

Bought a used 2006 Audi A4 with approximately 80,000kms on it a few months back (it has a year left on the CPO warranty). I have read several threads regarding the cam follower eventually going on these cars causing MAJOR engine damage. How many of you forum members have changed the cam follower on your A4? Do you recommend doing so? Does anybody know somebody in the GTA who can do the replacement at a good price (and obviously experienced at doing such a job)...

Thank you very much for your help!

Don't know if I can help much coz I never had to do it myself but something that would interest me. I looked online and it doesn't look that complicated to do yourself.
Great write up @ VWVortex.com - Audi A4 2.0T Cam Follower Install Pictures
and If you do to a mechanic I doubt it will cost you tooo tooo much.

Cheers

Hey Sergey! I commend you for wanting to help but Gooner18 stated in his original post that he still has an official warranty left for about a year. I certainly hope that he does not perform the work himself as that would void the remaining balance of the CPO warranty. ;)

Gooner18, I wouldn't worry too much about it unless the cam follower becomes or is potentially a source of a known problem that you are experiencing. If so, I would just take the car to the dealership, stand your ground and get them to do the work. You could browse through the thread I created and check to see if there are/were TSB's or recalls regarding the cam follower. Just click the link on my signature! Hope this helps!

I doubt very much it'd void warranty. If you are worried they'd try to screw you on warranty because you replaced it on your own, there is an alternative. You could always check it yourself to make sure you don't get stuck a diagnostic fee. Which they'll probably just hook it to the computer, find no code and tell you you're fine. Then hit you up with $120 charge or what ever it is.

If it looks worn through your own inspection, take it in to be "inspected" and replaced. At least that way you know if you getting screwed or not. If it doesn't need replacing just let it ride till CPO is done and do it yourself if you worried about warranty issues.

From the instructions it looks pretty simple to just pop the pump off and give it a once over.

I pulled mine and replaced it -- 2006 A4 with 53k miles. There was not much wear, but I just bought it used, so I had to be sure.

I used the tutorial linked previously from VWVortex.com, but it was for a 2005.5 which has a slightly different fuel pump, so I updated it with some helpful hints:

Thanks ramseyjacob (and all other contributors)....did you put back the same cam follower or did you replace it? How long did the whole thing take you to do? Your car has about the same mileage as mine.

Thanks

Re: 2006 Audi A4 Cam Follower Replacement (GTA)

I installed a new one. I wasn't sure what I was going to find...the wear can vary based on how the car is driven and I had no way to tell, so I figured ~$100 was worth it to avoid future cam damage.

I took me about 4 hours, but that included some time to fish out the banjo bolt and one of the bits I used from the engine compartment :)

I also took extra time because my fuel pump had a bleed valve, which I was not expecting...I took about 30 minutes deciding to just remove it.

Anybody know an experienced mechanic familiar with doing this procedure? The mechanic i contacted said they can do it for 3 hours labour + parts but have not seen anybody do this change voluntarily...
