2006 A4 Turbo

Hi guys..

I was woundering if there was a way to tell if your turbo is starting to die.. some time my car feels like the turbo is not working at all and other days it seems fine..

Boost gauge or logging with vag-com would be the best bet, if those show as ok I would get the inlet pipe off and check for shaft play or damaged fins.

This may be old hat to you but have you tried the trick with putting on emergency brake, turning the key to on (but don't start), pressing the accelerator to floor and holding for 3 seconds, letting it out, then turning off the ignition and waiting 2 minutes. Something about clearing driving history. Seems to work on my 06 A4. Removes hesitation and sort of stuttering performance.

You should give this a try. I guess it depends on how bad your car is acting up. My 06 was starting to get a really noticeable delay when I was shifting gears. I had been meaning to try this but I never got around to it until tonight. As soon as I got to driving I jumped on Stoney Trail (my road of choice to try to give the car some gas) and put it to the test. Needles to say the delay is gone.

Its a 3 minute process so it is worth your while if it fixes it.

All great suggestions so far. I'll add that it's much more likely that you have a vacuum or boost leak. Now, the turbo could be shot, but I'll be damned if half the 1.8T/2.0Ts on this planet haven't had some form of vacuum issue. And don't think dealers/mechanics won't replace an entire turbo because of simple vacuum issues. You should get a VAG-COM scan, and also describe how and when these failures occur.

Well I tryed what AtlAudi said and it seems to have worked but my car is still sucking back gas.. I fill up with 94 or 91 everytime and on average i get about 450 to 500 kms in town driving.. Is this normal? It hauls a** now everytime unlike before..

450 to 500 km for city driving is pretty normal.

:D nice to see you got the power back!...and yes 450 to 500 is about right depending on how you drive. I tend to like going hard so I find myself paying the price at the pump.

I just did this on mine and it was noticeably smoother. I found before getting a smooth shift took some pretty precise throttle and clutch control, now it is easy and nice and smooth, no hesitation. No difference in power on mine. What does it do exactly, does it just reset the electronic throttle body?
