Default Timing belt replacement/warranty debate

Hello

This is my first Audi, 2005 audi avant (pre owned). I am absolutely amazed with this car! I haven't had a single problem (other than 2 blown ignition coils)

However... I have just crept over the 100K mark. On my past oil change the dealership recommended I get the timing belt replaced as there are cracks throughout. The dealership quoted me $1100.

I am wondering if the timing belt is classified as a preventative maintenance item (ie. not covered under warranty) The car is warrantied till 120K.

That being said......Should I get a couple quotes from around town???? Are there some garages around town that are preferred??

I've read a couple of previous threads already...but can seem to find a good answer.

Plus Why on earth is this vehicle equipped with a belt!! and not a chain! (1.8T)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I just bought a 2005 Audi Avant in Calgary a month ago. I have been loving it ever since as well. I would have loved to find a white one.

The timing belt is scheduled maintenance so it is not a warranty item. If it breaks, you will really damage your engine. Getting it done at 100K is not a bad idea. All belts won't last until 120K exactly. Time is a major factor in it's life as well. There has to be some local shops in town that can do just as good of job for half the price.

Trucks are really the only engines with Timing chains. I agree timing chains should be used in all vehicles. It just how most cars are built.

True: timing belt replacement is scheduled for the 115k maintenance service.

I assume warranties won't be voided even if taken to a local, reputable shop?
