Default start & stall issues, any ideas?

Greetings, I'm new to the forum and in need help.

My wife has an 2003 A4 cabrio, 1.8T with 168,000 kms, dealer maintained. She has noticed on a few occasions that the car will start and immediately stall out. Today it happened again, start and stall, tried again and the car started and immediately stalled, on the third attempt it started and was fine.

This has happened a couple of times before (approximately 5 times since April) and hasn't happened since late May. The dealer indicated that they would need the car for a few days so they can try and diagnose while it happens.

The challenge is it doesn't happen very often and may not happen for a few weeks and leaving the car for this long a period is not realistic.

Can anybody suggest what the issue may be?

Thanks for your help, hopefully one day I can return the favour.
Regards,
Mike

I would first check to see if you can pull any codes from ECU using VAG, i'm sure there is someone close to you, or you can take it to the dealer and have it scanned
