Replacement Engine options for 2002 A4 1.8T
The original engine is dead (officially).
What options do I have when sourcing a replacement engine? If I buy a complete engine will a 2.0T fit or do I have to stay with a 1.8T.
Other than the dealership, where are the best places to source an engine or short/long blocks. Until I get the engine fully out and inspect it, I'm not sure exactly how much I'll need.
Blowing compressed air into the spark plug holes can almost make the oil filler cap explode and there is no compression in 2 of the cylinders for sure. Rings and walls are probably busted and that probably came from overheating in the top part of the engine. All in all, not good news.

Best place to find used engines is Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market
As for an engine, im not an expert in audi's yet, but if your going to be changing engines, your also going to need to be changing wire harnes's as well as computers...and posibly piping as well.....yes its posible, just how much work and money you want to put into it. Probably cheaper to put a 1.8 back in and sell it for an S4 if you really want to jump engine sizes.
either way, good luck with what ever you do. Car-parts should find you an engine.

Thanks for that. The wreckers seem very expensive options (except when comparing the dealer prices).
Does anyone have experience with autoshoppingcenter.com? They are quoting factory long blocks for about $3.5K (dealer full engine is $8K).

what happened to your engine? timing belt?
that seems about right for the price. if i were you i would buy another 1.8 and do any mods while the motor is out, Easy to work on, and then you can put the beast in. that would be easier than trying to fit another motor in and changing harnesses etc. Go with a bigger turbo, custom fit a large one, or go k04 do your exhaust manifolds, i ceramic coated mine, helps keep the heat out of the engine bay. All kinds of stuff. you gotta figure out what it is you want to do and how much ur willing to throw into the project. R u located in the GTA?

I vote try to find a motor from anywhere but the dealer because it will be much cheaper. As for putting in another motor there i'd stay away from that option.
Another 1.8T would be the easiest thing to do due to electronic glitches/wiring harnesses that don't match up later on and you'll forever be thinking whether any future problems are due to the engine swap or genuine problems.
