Default oil change/grade to use

I've searched and searched on here and have seen that the main oil grades used are 0w30 and 5w40 but I havnt read anything if I should be using a specific grade over another, my 02 a4 is coming up on the first oil change since I bought it and I'm not sure which oil to be buying/putting in it. Currently it has Blu synthetic 5w30 in it which is a vw 502 or 505 approved oil.

My main question is should I be running 0w30 or 5w40, or 0w30 in the winter and 5w40 the rest of the year round or one grade all year. I will be using Mobil1 synthetic and an OEM filter most likely.

Don't mean to be short here but what does the owners manual say? I also can't remember all the threads dealing with oil but we have debated this more than once.

I use 5w-40 synthetic only if that helps.

The only Mobil 1 oil that is vw502 approved is 0w40
if you want to use castrol syntec, you can use 5w40 (what the dealership uses), or you can use 0w30 German castrol (true group IV pao synthetic). If you want to stick with vw502 oils, the grade you use will depend on the brand of oil you choose. Personally, I have found that mobil 1 0w40 makes the 1.8T engine clatter a little too much for my liking, but a lot of people like it. I used to use castrol 5w40, but now use castrol 0w30. If you can find it, elf is great stuff, many ppl like lubro moly, the people on BITOG seem to like pennzoil platinum and german castrol. It's a lot like choosing your favorite beer. Everyone has their own preferred brand, and you have to choose according to what YOU like and are happy with. Like MikeH said, do some searching, as there must be hundreds of "which oil" threads lol

Honestly after reading the owners manual it seemed for anything other then putting gas in the car I should be taking it to the dealership. I'll try searching for some more oil threads

Just go to the Audi dealer and buy it. Oil 50 bucks, filter 12 bucks...how can you go wrong with OEM.

I own a 2004 A4 - 3.0 L quattro wagon and I had to put the better part of 8 containers of oil the last time I changed it...I used OEM filter but the napa guy didn't give me enough oil...remember ...the containers are NOT a litre any more...anyway after my 7th bottle she still wanted a little more before the light went out on the dash....she's due again now ..this time I think I will let Owasco do the change...I didn't save much at all for doing it myself..!used the grade that the owner's manual said to use

Hey, i just picked up oil from the dealership that they use for changes. Castrol Syntec 5W-40. They said that this is not sold anywhere only for me to see it on the shelf in Canadian Tire for 2 bucks less a liter. Hope this helps.

As for the 8 liters of oil in the 3.0, there is something not right there. I used to have one and as far as i remember it was only 5 liters of oil. And you do save quite a bit than doing it at a dealership. They charge 139 or so to do one. I buy the geniuine audi filter from the dealership for 12 bucks and oil adds up to about fifty. Which is more than 50% saving over getting the oil change done at the dealership.

The hardest part of doing an oil change is taking the stupid belly pan off and putting it back on, otherwise 15 minutes and your done. Filter can be easily reached from the top by unbolting the coolant tank and moving it to the side. Hope this helps, GLTA.

Why would you use the light on the dash to judge if you have enough oil? The car has a dipstick for a reason!

Thanks for the advice, my car did not come with a belly pan so I don't have to deal with that, I think I'm going to try the German Castrol with an OEM filter for my first oil change, as for doing it, I work at a GM dealer doing oil changes so I have a pit I can just drive over and hopefully be out of there in 10 min.
