Default loud engine noise when IDLE

Hi All,

I have an A4/b6(2002)/3.L/Quatrro and it has been sitting in the shop for over a month now and the mechanics are still figuring out what behind the problem.

The car has 150K miles so I decided to rebuild the engine and it was completed in3 weeks. So I went over and checked on the car and found out the car was making a loud noise ONLY when it in idle or in Park, and turned on AC/heater, but that noise did not occured if you accelerate . As of today the mechanics had done the following ( replaced all the Power Steering hoses, clamps, oil Gasket) and the issue has not yet resolved and it's become very frustrating. I spoke with them today and they are going to look into the torque converter tomorrow and see if it causes by that.

If you have any ideas what the cause might be please let me know.

Thanks,
B

Hi Ken,

The shop called me and said that the noise comes from Fly Wheel/Flex Plate. They are looking into it.. This will be my last Audi.

Well, are you sure this is the problem? How much they want to charge for fix this problem? Are you sure the problem is not cost during the process of rebuild engine?
If the shop is not specialized in European car, they may not be able to identify the problems. Finding an experience mechanic to fix your car is important.
Here is my experience on fix my 03 1.8T Quattro.
One day the engine light is on, engine making a loud noise than normal, temperature reading too low (only holding at a quarter all the time), the car was losing horsepower (drive like a Honda civic, but engine noise very loud), gear indicator doesn’t work, and the car vibrate badly. So, I bring my car to one of shop in local.
After 2 days, they told me my car need to do a turn-up, my shifter indicator not works, and engine mount need to be replace, thermostat and temp sensor need to be replace. After long lists of problem, they estimate on the parts and labor around $3500. I was panic, I am thinking about selling the car.
So I decide to bring my car to a second shop to see what they said. Few days later, I bring my A4 to the second shop, and let they to diagnosis the problems one more time. They call me later afternoon, said I have to do a turn-up, and change thermostat and temp sensor, in order to turn off the engine check light, and I did it and paid them 1000 to finish the job. 2 days later, I got my car back, the old problems still there, and I only driving for 20 km, the engine light on again. I bring the car back immediately. So this time they tell me I have to change my front o2 sensor, and my fuel injectors, and my tiptronic switch, estimate another $3000. The guys who fix my car give me suggestion is sell it……..
So I was about the trade in the car and change to another one. I really like the car; I decide to give a last shot on it. So, I bring to the third shop to re-diagnosis again. They call me on the same day later, and told me the problems is from the connectors (don’t remember what it was.). It only cost around $250 to fix it. So, now the Hp is back, engine light is off, and loud noise is gone, the vibrations are back to normal.
My point is, find another shop to get a second diagnosis (around 150 I think). Worst cast bring back to the shop to fix. I think most of them trying to rip you off.

Hi all,

I finally got my car back after 3 months in the shop and it turned out that loud engine noise caused by the torque converter, and the shop waived the labor fee since it took them too long to fix it.

The car is driving good so far with a rebuild engine and i am hoping it will last me for another 5 years. Honestly speaking it will be my first and last on an Audi. It caused me way too much money and time, and the list is uncountable.

I agree with you. I just got spend another 1500 with the car to fix the white smoke problem. Sell it after your manufacture warranty is over.
