Default Importing a A4 from Seattle (over boarder costs)

Hey guys - I'm aniticipating joining the Audi brotherhood soon, but I want to know some info on how much the over the boarder costs are for getting an A4 up to me here in canada..

I know there about the little fee's and all that, but im specifically about getting the vehicle inspected and those changes. I have heard they are upwards of 1000 dollars. However at the same time my friend just brough a 01 VW up and they paid only for the inspection because no changes were needed.

Has anyone here done this? If so how was your experience. Im salivating at the car, but I need to know if the changes will be too much to make the car overall much of a saving.

and anyone who wants to know specs on the car ill let you know, just because im stoked as hell on the car.

Audi A4 2004 1.8T Quattro
30K miles garage kept all records
Silver/Blk leather. New tires
1 Owner

This appears to be the car im getting. Let me know any help is more than appreciated. Thanks

Jordan

I say stop by ministry of transpiration and ask them, they will give you a better insight on this. Butthe specs on the car look dirty! If you getting a good price and everything checks out, get it :P

roughly add about 14% to the purchase price and it should include everything.

Did you get a deal down in the US? When I was looking to buy my 2005 Audi Avant, US prices were not better than Canadian prices. In Seattle and Portland it is much more of a wagon culture compared to here in Vancouver.

Brought a car back from Oregon a couple of years ago, and it was virtually hassle free - as long as you have all the paper work completed and in the right order. The only real ordeal I had was the 12 hour bus trip down to Portland!

Go to Registrar of Vehicles web site Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV.ca) to get an overview of importing cars into Canada, and the documentation you will require. You will have to get a letter from Audi USA or an authorized dealer confirming that all outstanding recalls have been taken care of. Check out Roger Jobs Porsche/Audi in Bellingham- they have been servicing my car since I bought it and have been awesome (unlike MCL here in Vancouver that wouldn't have anything to do with me because I bought a car from the US & not them). They also flashed the software to update the country code to Canada so that DRL would be turned on - & charged me $65 to do so (One dealer up here was going to charge me $350, & another wanted to hard wire them on??!). Because it's out of warranty, the local dealers may be a little more receptive to having you as a customer, so check them out as well.

You will also have to complete a US Customs Vehicle Export Worksheet along with a copy of the Title/Certificate of ownership and a Bill of Sale. Follow the directions carefully - they must have this documentation 3 business days prior to you actually taking the vehicle across the border (which must be between 8:30AM - 3:30PM at the Blaine border crossing). I phoned them & they faxed me the forms (didn't have anything on the web site back then at least) 1-360-332-2632 Fax 303-332-2639. I then faxed them back all the paper work so that they had their 3 days processing time before I brought the car up. The guy I purchased the car from privately was very helpful & accommodating & sent me the title & bill of sale ahead of time. If this isn't possible, you will have to leave the car up in Blaine for 3 days while they do their processing.

Once you have their forms duly stamped & approved, proceed to Canadian Customs - the regular lanes - not Nexus!. They will fill out another set of forms, take any duties (6.1% for German made cars I believe) and GST, inspect the car and send you on your way.

You then have 30 or 60 days to have the vehicle safety inspected. Canadian Tire is one of the authorized centres here in the Lower Mainland and the charge was around $100. RIV will then mail out a certificate and a sticker that must be mounted in a door frame.

You should arrange with ICBC to get a temporary permit if you are driving the car up from wherever you are buying the car. Allow enough time for delays at the border, and a few days to get the car to Cdn Tire for inspection. Once you have the inspection completed, you can register the car with ICBC and get permanent insurance.

Good luck with the import. If you have the time & patience to jump through the all the bureaucracy, you should be able to save yourself a few $$.

(Just bought an 03 A4 Avant 1.8T a couple of weeks ago, local car with 63.0K on it & absolutely mint condition. Private msg me if you like & we can swap asking prices. Also know of a nice clean 04 A4 3.0 with about 96.0K on it that I almost bought as well if you want something to compare to.)

Don't forget that after the Canadian Tire (out of Country) Inspection, there will also be an OOP (out of province) inspection.

The Canadian Tire inspection is a visual inspection only to identify any alterations made to the vehicle. The OOP is a mechanical/safety inspection that is far more detailed.

Each jurisdiction must be a little different.
Here in BC, at least 2 yrs ago went I went through this, the Cdn Tire inspection was the only one required.
