I'm going to bring the car to an independent mechanic who specializes in Audi. Hopefully he'll have a better idea of the diagnosis.

The dealer didn't want to speculate on anything. I could use some speculation. If its not getting worse...how long could it last? Is it just an annoyance? Will the Tranny blow up?

I had a front wheel noise that went whoosh, whoosh, whoosh. It was difficult to hear at high speed. It has now got worse and can be heard at high speed, but is still more pronounced at low speeds. It is not yet a clicking sound that is usually attributed to a CV failure. I am going to wait until the noise becomes pronounced enough to better identify the problem.

I know in your case the sound is steadier, but has no one suggested a possible CV joint problem?

how's the power steering fluid level? Check that! Or power steering pump?

He shut off the engine at speed, and the noise was still there. Also, if a power steering issue, the noise should be there when stationary at idle and with engine revd.

I have similar noise on my 2006, A4 3.2 Quattro and it has only 65,000 KM. It started about one week ago shortly after removing Winter Wheels and putting my Summer Wheels.

Problem is worse when turning right, not as bad when turning left. Can hear the noise from about 20KM/H and get somewhat loader as speed increases. Putting the car in Neutral doesn't change the noise. Applying the brakes reduces the noise a little.

Rotated both Tire/wheel at the front - no differennce

That almost sounds like a wheel bearing....

Well the Indy mechanic said yes it is coming from the transmission and no he has no idea what it is.


There are a lot of transmission shops...does anyone know if they tend to work on Audis?

I am not sure what I am to do now... bring it to the dealer and have them charge me $2,000 to open it up when they don't even know what they are looking for?

It has been a while so I thought I would post an update.

The problem has been fixed...but it was not cheap!

I ended up getting the Audi dealership to do the work. I dropped it off on a Monday and it was done on a Thursday...3.5 weeks later! Sure glad they gave me a courtesy car!

So from the bill the:

Cause: Disassembled Transmission & Found bearings burnt on differential, pinion bearing pitted, input shaft bearing damaged, needle bearings for output shaft damaged, side gears on differential worn.

Correction: Replaced all bearings & races. Installed necessary shims on pinion and differential, replaced all seals, re-installed transmission.

There were tons of bearings, shims, rings, and other stuff on the parts lists... the biggest $ ones were Differential pinion ($280), rollbearin ($74, $91, and $200)

The total parts were $1354 and total labour was $1637 for just over $3300 in total.

I always thought the differential was at the back of the car and not attached to the transmission?
