Hey Everyone,

If anyone could shed some light on this for me that would be great:

I recently purchased a used 2004 Audi A4 3.0 Quattro Sedan, it has 105,000km on it now.

My car has a "quick shift" between first and second gear. It goes to about 2500 RPM in a bout 1 second or less, and then shifts to second...regardless of how aggressively I am driving it. (For example, if I'm very gently accelerating it will have like a half second delay, then it will rev up fairly quick, and then change gears).

Once the car is in second gear the shifting feels normal through the other gears and back down to first again.

Also, If i'm driving fairly aggressively (hard accelerations, etc) first gear will still stay in gear longer (between 3000 and 4000 RPM) and switch out normally.

I also had it serviced recently and my mechanic noticed it as well, they checked the transmission fluid and it was kind of discolored.

Right now my plan is to change the fluid and hope it makes this issue less noticeable.

As I mentioned this is my first Audi, is this normal performance? Should I be concerned about this being a warning sign for an upcoming transmission problem? Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

Any answers from car owners or Experts on this forum would be much appreciated!

i have the same car mines 2002 though i got the transmission oil changed and the filter it totaly tranformed the way the car shifted through the gears.

i would get the oil changed before trying anything else.

I actually took it in today. The transmission fluid looked burnt, and there were some metal filings on all four magnets as well as some even smaller filings in the fluid. Apparently it looked as if the car had 200,000km on it, not 107,000km! Possibly from hard driving, but the previous owner was an older business exec, so most likely from commuting stop and go down the DVP to Toronto every day for 4 years (endless gear shifting).

Anyways, I got a new filter and changed out and replaced all the fluid (I was supposed to do it at 120,000kms anyways). It drives a bit better, still kind of a soft shift between first and second gear, so I'll see if maybe I have to work it in a bit. As long as I'm not driving really gently (like parking lots and stuff) the car it still feels fine, so hopefully I'm in the clear for now.

FYI to anyone else in need of this service, its like $200 (because of the all synthetic fluid, and $90 something of that is labour), so not the end of the world (like a $4000.00+ transmission replacement for example) and should probably be done anyways if the fluid was looking like mine.
