gas mileage is ridiculous on 1.8T!

Re: gas mileage is ridiculous on 1.8T!
For those who get 700 km per tank in the city with a CVT, how many km at a time are you traveling? Are you traveling short distances or from one end of town to another in a large city? How often do you have to fill up?

as for how many times i tank up, well i average about 2500-3000km a month so about 4 times a month which = about $300 for gas per month!

You know what would be a cool experiment??? To find out how much it would run on 91 and then do the same test under the same conditions on 94 and see if it is really worth the extra 20 cents per litre.

That's great, I still can't believe a BT manual transmission car will get the same mileage a Tip car or better because I have never really run the car into the red zone and I do push it into the boost. For the fuel I use Chevron 94 and nothing else because on the West Coast of Canada where I live this is all we have for 94. On my Corrado I would use either this or Shell 91 but that car was not heavily modified and it was running OBD-II. At Shell or Chevron all of the lesser grades use ethanol in the fuel and I am not a fan of that at all. In my opinion cutting fuel with ethanol is just like cutting anything else with a different product, it is just a way to stretch your product further allowing you to make more $$ while the end customer suffers.

Re: gas mileage is ridiculous on 1.8T!
"Many high-performance engines are designed to operate with a high maximum compression, and thus demand high-octane premium gasoline. A common misconception is that power output or fuel mileage can be improved by burning higher octane fuel than a particular engine was designed for. The power output of an engine depends in part on the energy density of its fuel, but similar fuels with different octane ratings have similar density. Since switching to a higher octane fuel does not add any more hydrocarbon content or oxygen, the engine cannot produce more power."
And...
"However, burning fuel with a lower octane rating than required by the engine often reduces power output and efficiency one way or another. If the engine begins to detonate, that reduces power and efficiency for the reasons stated above. Many modern car engines feature a knock sensor – a small piezoelectric microphone which detects knock, and then sends a signal to the engine control unit to retard the ignition timing. Retarding the ignition timing reduces the tendency to detonate, but also reduces power output and fuel efficiency. Because of these systems, under certain conditons of high load and high temperature, a given car may produce more power with a higher octane fuel. With a lower octane fuel, these engines systems will be reducing power to control detonation, while with a higher octane fuel, the engine will produce full power. And some modern high performance engines are actually optimized for higher than pump premium (93 AKI in the US). The 2001 - 2007 BMW M3 with the S54 engine is one such car. Car and Driver magazine dyno tested a car and found that the power output increased as the AKI was increased up to approximately 96 AKI. Also, these systems can result in higher fuel mileage for cars designed for the higher octane fuels."

I still think your foot changes the mileage better than 87 or 91 octane will for just one tank of fuel.

2003 A4 B6 1.8T I get about 550 per tank in the city and about 675 on the highway, but keep in mind I usually average about 120-125 when I am on the highway.
Will be interesting to see if/when I chip it, how that is affected.

That's great mileage though, it will be interesting to see how much of a change you will see. I don't think it will drop too much until you are in the boost and this will be where you will see the most drop. Is the car currently in its stock form or do you already have mods done to the car?
