Here are almost a years worth of fuel mileage from my 2005 avant 1.8T
Ezera (Audi A4 Quattro) | Fuelly

Recently I have noticed my fuel mileage dip a bit.

maxaudi, I don't quite believe your gas mileage but I don't have a CVT. When I did an all highway tank I think the most I got out of it was 750kms.

That does sound a bit low for a 5 speed with no mods, I get about the same on my car and it is fairly modified. I have a GT28RS turbo with larger injectors, inline fuel pump, Unitronic software and so on and the car puts down about 250 hp at 18 PSI and will still do about 400 kms a tank. I live about 6 minutes from work so with a 2 minute warm-up the oil temp gauge is just starting to move when I get there. If you do a lot of stops and starts then your mileage will drop because it takes the most energy to get the car rolling but little to keep it moving.

Some considerations, this is a heavy car at about 3,200 lbs for the B4 1.8T and the motor is pretty small so getting this mass rolling will take a fair amount of energy. If you have hills where you have to put more energy out then this will also take its toll especially when cold. Check your plugs and make sure they are the correct heat range and they are the correct plugs for the car. I run copper core plugs because of the mods and these perform much better than the platinum plugs but they only last about 2 oil changes which is roughly about 8,000 kms. Triple electrode plugs are usually a good choice as the gap stays pretty consistent when they heat up and they wear a little longer than single electrode plugs.

Common items that can cause poor mileage would be the main O2 sensor or if you run an oil filtered air filter a dirty MAF can cause this. You should try to use oil that is not too think, 5W/40 is probably a better grade too use as it doesn't add too much drag to the motor but still protects the motor.

Automatics will get less mileage because it takes a bit of energy to operate it, the auto trans is like a big oil pump and sucks the juice. This will drop the mileage and if you have AWD then this takes more energy as well so this is going to drop it as well. Even tires with a bigger contact patch will take more fuel to run and if you have winters these will also take more energy. I thought my 1.8T was doing pretty good at about 400 kms because I still drive hard and if I can push my Corrado to 450 kms on a 70 litre fuel tank I was doing great.

On long drives mine a 1.8 quattro tip consumes less than my old base Mazda 3GX
However commuting to work and back barely 3 km each way and mainly city driving it does consume somewhat more especially since it is heavier partially due to the extra weight and the wuattro...regardless your consumption is NOT normal

I can't say for sure, I have never owned an automatic so I can't really give you an informed opinion. I think it sounds low just comparing it to mine because mine has a lot of mods and I drive it hard and still get the same rough mileage as your unmodded car. I'm also used to cars that get crappy mileage because mine are modded so I never really pay too much attention to it.

Short drive, automatic, AWD, heavy car and stop and go will certainly pay its toll but it shouldn't punish you that much unless mine gets exceptional mileage for the mods it has. I love to watch that boost gauge peg so I am on it a fair bit once it is warm.

i did some extensive research on the forum and it seems like people with the same car as me (lots of them) get around 400+- in city driving. I guess it's not that off from everyone. but i must say it sucks for a 4cylinder!!! I'm more worried about the catalyc converter potentially failing then my gas mileage. that's why i asked

for an automatic, your mileage sounds very normal to me.
i had a B5.5 passat 1.8T with automatic and FWD, and it got much worse than my A4 Quattro with a 5 speed manual. so even though the a4 has quattro and the passat was fwd, still the manual KILLS the auto for mileage.
i use about 11.0L/100km city and 7.0L/100km highway.
in my old passat it was more like 13.0 city and 8.8 highway.

I get around what max does in the pervious post, 900 highway, but city wise its about the same as you 400-500, depends on my foot :P haha, but i do not drive very often, only when i need to get to class or some groceries lol.
