Default gas mileage is ridiculous on 1.8T!

Hi all,

After owning the 1.8T for almost 9 months it's starting to make me think...

isn't 400km on a full tank (city driving) a little excessive on a 4 cylinder turbo engine?

I've had situations where i got around 650km on only highway, but this city driving gas

mileage is insane! So 63 litres of gas (full tank) divided by 400km city equals

6.34 km/litre. This car consumes gas like a V8! WTH!!! In the winter it's even worse!

It seems like many of us only get this mileage? Or is my vehicle running rich that

could run into potential problems like catalyc converter failure?

Just wanna hear about everyone's gas mileage and driving habits!

*ps. I get 400km doing normal driving and not revving the engine up to 4000rpm or more.

It must be your car, and/or the way you drive the car. I am getting around 900km on highway (~115km/h), and 700 in the city. My Audi is a 2005 B6 1.8t CVT. [ The CVT transmission is the least reliable, but the most efficient. ]

I do not know if it's the quattro or not. If it is it shouldn't be that much, in my opinion.

I've just been searching thru the forum and it seems like my gas mileage isn't too off from everyone elses, but i can't believe that you get 700 out of a tank easily. Do you put any additives in your car?

It makes a huge difference if you are traveling short distances. The vehicle is most efficient when it's at operating temperature. For me, I do the same as you. Around 400km per tank but 10 minutes or less to work and back so the car is just at it's optimal operating temperature when I show up at work and turn the car off. That is the down side. The up side is I only have to fill up once a month. If I were to drive 100km one way to my job, sure I would be getting 700-900km on a tank, but I would be filling up every week. How often do you fill up?

It is the weight of the car and cold startups that affect it.
I was getting 10l per100km on 1.8 liter Jetta city but the car's weight was 1150 kg.
Audi weighs 1500 kg, so you need more gas to accelerate it.
The formula is

Energy=(MassXSpeed square)/2

So both mass and speed affect your gas mileage. There is a lot that you can do about the speed but there is nothing you can do about the mass.

The engine uses 3X the gas when cold. How many times do you start the car?

I am getting 13l/100km city and 10.5 l/highway on 2.8 liter engine.
My pedal is to the metal all the time when the cops are not around so 85% of the time.

Doug// that's actually a very good point you pointed out. I do a lot of short distances, and school is only 8km's away. I only fill up around 25dollar worth every time so I fill up around every 4-5days.

Adam// I start and shut off the car very often, I'd say at least 5 times a day.

Well there's your answer. Try it out and see how long you can last before the fuel light goes on after a fill up. If you are filling up every 3 to 4 weeks, I'm sure you will be the envy of a lot of people who travel 700km on a tank and have to fill up every week. A wise man on the Vortex once told me that if I was driving every day and filling up once a month and getting 400km per tank, I have nothing to complain about. Just my 2 cents.
