It sounds like timing belt to me, and he also tried to restart it and the engine cranked hard. This tells me that the pistons hit the valves.
I was in this situation with my brand new 1989 Jetta 1.8 l.
The dealer fixed the engine for free and it was a total disaster as these parts do not fit together anymore. The car was jerking all the time and I decided to sell it at loss.
