First, your CanOBD2 reader will soon pay for itself!
Second, for a quarter million clicks, 11.8l/100km in winter aint too bad!
My 04, 1.8T Quattro, is doing 10.5 right now, with 85k on it.
Third, I assume you were throwing a P0420 code, with a CEL.
I don’t want to appear to be teaching my granny to suck eggs, but here is my 2 cents worth.
As you probably already know, the cat converter has an oxygen sensor in front and behind it.
When your vehicle is warm and running, the upstream oxygen sensor voltage or waveform (if scoped) reading should fluctuate.
The 2nd or downstream o2 sensor reading should be fairly steady. Typically the P0420 code triggers the CEL if the readings of the two sensors are similar. This is indicative of (among other things) a converter that is not working as efficiently as it should be (according to specs), as part of the vehicle emissions system.
My suggested steps for troubleshooting a P0420 error code include:
Check for exhaust leaks at the manifold and catalytic converter. Repair as required.
Check the wires and the connectors for the o2 sensors.
You should use a scope or voltmeter to diagnose the o2 sensors.
I am more inclined on the 2nd sensor giving a wrong reading.
However, if the sensor’s waveform or voltage moves as much as the front o2 sensor, then the cat converter is bad.

A year ago, I had an MIL for check engine.
With much apprehension, I booked into the stealership.
They had my baby for a day and for $100, they rest an engine code!
I hope I am not stating the obvious here.
I bought a CanOBD2 myself 3 months ago from Princess Auto (on sale for $49).
It has already paid for itself over and over again.
When you get an MIL (malfunction indicator light, amber or red), as you have already done so, connect your CanOBD2. It scans and identifies the MIL as a P code.
Take note of the P code. Look up the code in the AUDI only code list.
Then reset the MIL.
Depending on the code, you can discuss with your local repair shop (or some just need a reset).
For example, I had an CEL or MIL for check engine.
Trying not to panick (thinking of hefty repair bills) I looked up the code which was an O2 sensor fault.
I reset the MIL (without being irresponsible in resetting any MIL, everytime I do so saves me $100 at the stealership repair dept).
I added a fuel system treatment to my tank.
Never seen the MIL since.
I also had an air bag P code, which I reset, and have not seen it recur since.
Talk about value for money!

I have been tracking my fuel indicator. When i take off from a standing start, it goes up to as high as 40 litres per 100 kms..and then it settles down to about 11.5 or so per 100 kms..
mine is a 1.8 T..wondering if this is "normal".
I am not talking about racing ..just daily city driving
any comparisons?

40.7l/100 on accelerate, anywhere from 15-30l/100 through the box (tiptronic) depending upon terrain, etc., but at 100km/hr, 7.5-8.5l/100 depending upon terrain.
Around town average consumption 11-12l/100, and Barrie/Toronto 400 hwy @ 130km/hr = 8-9l/100.

May not be a surprise given fuel efficiency improvements across model years, but the 2006 2.0T is a few litres per 100 km better than the instantaneous figures you guys are posting for the 1.8T.
