Default Cold Start Grinding

Has anyone experienced a quick grinding noise once starting the ignition on their B5 1.8T before? I notice it especially in the cold morining but on more nicer days I can tell it is still there but the noise is way lower almost negligable.

Any help you guys/gals can give me would be appreciated.

Nick

Should be secondary air pump, the pump's bearing dry/worn out. It suppose to be turn on only few min every time you start you car for quick cat warming up. Took off the hose, if there's water in pump, you need a new combi valve as well. if just dry, then you're lucky.

For you desciption, it's just begining. cheap solution, open the rear part of pump(3 plastic clips), clean, then oil clean the bearing, then grease pack it, it'll work quite again. Off car clean will be better, but you can even do it on car.

Its no bearing noise thats for sure...........its not a ticking noise either from reading other posts.

Its a 3 second grinding noise as if the starter is over turning extra but not as loud. Its right after starting ignition for two - three seconds and then stops and then everything sounds normal! It concerns me cause its seems to be coming from the engine compartment.

You may be talking about the cam tensioner noise...concidered "normal". It uses oil pressure so first thing in the morning it takes a second or two to build pressure pressure to the tensioner. Maybe have someone else start the engine while you listen under the hood to help narrow down where the noise is coming from. If it's from the back of the valve cover then it's probably the tensioner that you are hearing.

Hi Nidzo,

I think the noise is from the starter's one-way clutch. Low temp thickens the lube inside your starter driveshaft. It hinders the starter pinion to retract from the flywheel ring gear immediately after you release the ignition key. Therefore your already started engine keeps spinning your one-way clutch and causes the unpleasant grinding noise. The phenomenon should disappear when temp is high. If it did not go away, you may have problem(s) with one-way clutch or starter pinion / flywheel ring gear teeth.

Hope it helps.
