Coilpacks question!
How often are you supposed to change coil packs? I have a 2004 A4 1.8T with 93,000 km and had one blow on me which was pretty scary not knowing why the car started to shake with the check engin light flashing.
I stopped at a car service station somewhere near niagara falls and the guy told me he put a used coil pack in to get me home and told me get a new one plus spark plugs....... Anyone with experience in this field? Shall I change all 4 of the coilpacks with plugs or just the one that went out?

I'd say Just replace the one, no reason to replace the good ones unless you've got money to burn. keep the spare in the trunk incase another goes bad. At least now you'll know whats wrong if another goes out

depends on if the other 3 were replaced recently, or are the originals...
If all 4 were the originals, and 1 died, might as well save a bit of labour and just do all 4. Unless of course, you want to wait to have the next road trip interrupted with one of the other one's deciding to blow.
I believe they usually range from 80-120,000 km, but I'm not sure on that.
FYI, you might also want to do an oil change, as when the pack goes the cylinder can flood and you can get fuel sliding past the rings into the oil...

I guess I'll give that a try, I was thinking just to replace them all since they are originals.... Anyway I'll call an audi dealership tomorrow and see what gives, how did you find out coilpacks were recalled?

Sorry again but yah i just researched it and they were recalled!!! So can I take it to any audi dealership? I bought my car used privately....

I got the letter in my mail for my 2004 audi 1.8t which I had bought used but after having it serviced once i guess all the service records/recalls got transfered to my address.
Was worried mine might not be covered since I had replaced them a few times after getting the GIAC software update.
They said as long as you had old sets they could do it free of charge.
they even replaced the spare I had since I was used to them giving out, with one of the newer audi approved versions.
Let us know how it turns out
